LHS students honored for academic achievementby David HillEditor
Forty-five students of the seniorclass at Lincoln High School in ThiefRiver Falls were honored Monday,May 7, for maintaining a cumulative3.50 grade point average over all fouryears at LHS. “It’s been amazing school year,” saidPrincipal Scott Brekke. “The studentscertainly made their mark on theschool.” Brekke reminded students thatthey probably wouldn’t be at this ban-quet if it weren’t for their parents andgrandparents, so remember to thankthem. Brekke told them to also rememberthe core values they stress at LincolnHigh School. Whether at a job or con-tinued education, the core values thatexpress being present, being excellentto each other, not allowing school orjob to be a spectator sport, and respon-sible use of technology will carry themfar. Several students were singled outfor special awards. The American Le-gion scholarship was presented toBrandon Mack. The American Legion
Auxiliary scholarship was presented toKathryn Kruta. Kruta was alsoawarded an ROTC scholarship valuedat over $77,000. Karryn Leake wasawarded the Thief River Falls Times“You Write Real Good” Scholarship, which recognizes a student with out-standing writing skills. “It’s an honor to serve the commu-nity, but especially on days like this,”said Brian Holmer, mayor of ThiefRiver Falls. He told the students theyshould be proud of themselves, but tocontinue working toward “creatingtheir own movie.” He also told themthat when they leave Thief River Fallsto always remember their hometown. The event was sponsored by Tex-tron Specialized Vehicles, which ownsArctic Cat in Thief River Falls. RandyTwistol, director of human resourcesat Arctic Cat, said Textron and ArcticCat were privileged to be part of thisevent. Although he was certain theywere getting advice from many differ-ent sources, he offered that they thinkof their future to move forward withconfidence and think of what they arepassionate about. Superintendent Bradley Bergstromsaid that not only does he recognize
these students for their workin school, but often sees themworking hard in the commu-nity. He thanked them forthat. He told the students to
keep themselves open to op-portunities in the future.Bergstrom said maybe someof them would become super-intendents some day. Helaughed when he said thathad someone told him he’d bea superintendent of a schooldistrict when he was theirage, he would have fallen offhis chair laughing. He too offered advice that
he offered to his children:make sure to manage yourtime effectively, find a pas-sion, and don’t be afraid toask questions. He also sug-gested that they thank thepeople who helped them
reach this point in their lives. “One of the best parts of being thechair of the Board of Education isbeing able to attend events like this,”said Mike Spears, chairman of theBoard of Education. Like others pres-ent at the event, Spears encouragedthe students to thank their parents, but he also encouraged them to thankthe school staff because everyone fromjanitor to principal had a hand in pro-viding them the opportunity to be thebest they could be. Three students delivered farewelladdresses. Faith Dvergsten describedhow her parents and staff at the schoolencouraged her to step out of her com-fort zone. She said without their sup-port and encouragement, she wouldn’thave been able to stand up in front ofher peers and their parents. “I wouldhave been catatonic.” She also thankedher parents for encouraging her to beherself. Marley Nelson encouraged studentsto take a moment to reflect on the per-son who, over the years, woke them upevery morning, made their lunch, wentto all their activities, listened to theircomplaints about hard practices - thatperson who through thick or thin, helped them pack their parachute. Packing their parachute was atheme revisited by Kylea Praska andKurt Reynolds, communicationsteacher, who delivered the staff re-sponse. Praska thanked Reynolds, andCoaches Loe and Mumm for helpingpack her parachute - preparing for herfuture. She shared some entertainingstories about experiences with them. She also thanked her parents andbrother for all the sacrifices they madefor her. Reynolds encouraged students totake a cue from Dave Ramsey whosaid success requires a constant thirstfor knowledge and improvement. Reynolds also shared what it takesto persevere when life delivers a set-back. He shared the story of one per-son on Ramsey’s blog who burned over90 percent of his body with second andthird-degree burns after playing withfire in their garage. At the time, the
kid was not aware of the extent of hisinjuries and was worried his dad wasgoing to kill him for playing with fire, but when his dad entered his hospitalroom, he told his son he loved him andwas proud of him. This was not whathe expected, and when his mom en-tered the room, he asked her if he wasgoing to die. She asked him, “Do youwant to survive?” When he answeredyes, she told him he’ll have to fightharder than he has ever before.Reynolds said he survived and went onto become very successful. The youth also observed that everynight his doctor would gather everyoneresponsible for his care in his roomand tell them how important their jobwas to keeping him alive - even thejanitor. The point of Reynolds’ message tostudents at LHS was to make themaware of the support structures intheir lives, and that if they know theirwhy, they can endure any how. The Honors Banquet was sponsoredby the Thief River Falls Chapter of theAmerican Association of UniversityWomen, Textron/Arctic Cat and Lin-coln High School. The Lincoln HighSchool Jazz Band, under the directionof Katie Hahn performed. Representa-tives of the junior class served themeals prepared by David Lee Cater-ing.
