•The North West Rental Housing Tribunaladministers the Rental Housing Act 50 of1999; the Tribunal facilitates the soundsrelations between the tenants and thelandlords who rent residential properties.

•One of the Tribunal’s responsibilitiesis to educate, provide information andadvise tenants and landlords with regardto their rights and obligations in relationto dwellings within its area of jurisdiction.

•Any tenant or landlord, group of tenants,landlords,Tribunalconcerninganunfairpractice.once a complaint has been lodged theparties have an opportunity to have theirproblems addressed at a mediation toachieve a negotiated settlement or hearing

•Where the Tribunal is of view that thedispute is of such a nature that it cannotbe resolved through mediation or mediatorhas issued a certificate to the effect thatthepartiesareunable to resolve thedisputethrough mediation, conduct a hearing andmakes such a ruling as itmay consider justand fair in the circumstances. A ruling ofthe Tribunal is deemed to be an order of amagistrate’scourtintermsoftheMagistrate’sCourt Act, 1944 (Act No 32 of 1944)

•AnypersonwhohasbeendulysummonedtoappearbeforetheTribunalandfails,withoutsufficientnoticewillbeguiltyofanoffenceandliableonconvictiontoafineorimprisonmentnotexceedingtwoyearsorbothsuchfineandsuchimprisonment.
