Mr. Han says Nakene has set the tone, and “I believe we have many of you in the business that can exceed her achievement. To the rest of the colleagues let us continue supporting women in our business.” Other prominent women finalists in the category included Aspen Pharma-care’s Lorraine Hill, Quest Staffing Solutions’ Kay Vittee, BIE Group’s Hannelie Nel and Sizwe-Ntsaluba-Gobodo’s Nonkululeko Gobodo. Nonkululeko is a founder of South Africa’s biggest black-owned audit firm and was named ‘Top Businesswoman of the Year Award’ in the award ceremony that was held in Emperors Palace on Thursday, 14 August 2014. AN ELEPHANT overturned a vehicle driven by local tourists at Sable Dam near Phalaborwa Gate in the Kruger National Park (KNP) around 07:15 last Thursday morning.

A local doctor rushed to the scene of the accident to attend to tourists immediately and they suffered minor injuries.

The tourists came to the Park as day visitors and were back at their home in Tzaneen the same day.

They were on their way to Letaba Rest Camp and passed-by the Sable Dam, which overlooks a sleep-over hide and has an abundance of animals that gather to drink.

The elephant was busy drinking water from the dam on the opposite side of where the

vehicle was, when it suddenly walked through the water towards one of the tourists’ car.

“Although according to the tourists who were there, the elephant did not show any signs of agitation; we would like to appeal to the public to be on the look-out for them when driving in that area. Please ensure that you are not blocked by another vehicle when these huge animals approach, so that you can get away quickly when the need arises”, said the KNP’s GM: Communications and Marketing, William Mabasa.

More than 1, 5 million people visit the KNP each year and incidents of this sort are rare but not unheard of as elephants can toss and uproot trees with ease.

NUUSPHALABORWA HERALD Friday August 29, 2014 3

A nursing sister from Salwane Clinic, in full uniform disrupted a proceedings during the community meeting at Selwane Village recently.

It all started when Willie Ramoshaba, a newly appointed trustee of Leolo Community Trust announced to the over 200 members of the Selwane community that the royal families of the fi ve traditional authorities of Maseke, Mashishimale, Selwane, Majeje and Makhushane will be receiving 10% of the R8 million annual dividend income from the shares which these communities own in Palabora Copper, formerly known as Palaborwa Mining Company.

The meeting of the Trustees of Leolo and the community of Selwane Village was part of a massive community road show which the Trust was conducting for the fi ve communities.

The Leolo Community Trust, a non-profi t organization whose primary purpose is to undertake activities for the benefi t of the communities of the fi ve traditional authority in Ba Phalaborwa Municipal area and to uplift them its enterprise development fund.

The objective of the road show was to introduce Leolo and its trustees to the fi ve

benefi ting communities and, further, to present the 2014 budget and the activities of the trust.

One of the key focuses of the trust is to ensure that the tribal offi ces are capacitated to a point where they can start to offer effi cient services.

It is for that reason that, according to the Chairman of the Trust, Steve Ramalepe, ‘an amount of R200 000 has been set aside for the capacitation of the administration of each tribal offi ce,’ said Ramalepe.

He also said that the issue of stability and safety for the people of these fi ve communities is of importance for the Trust.

By way of emphasizing what is in the information brochure of the trust, Ramalepe pointed out that the trust has set aside an amount of R1 million as an emergency fund for natural disasters such as fi re, diseases, heavy rain.

The funds were disturbed as follows: 10% is for the sustenance of the royal families of the fi ve communities at R300 000 per royal family per year, 20% is for Enterprise Development and 70% is for benefi cial activities and projects of the broader community.

The chief of Selwane village, Chief Tebogo Malatji, did not mince his words when he said that as the chief of the area he could not just sit back and witness a small group of people in his community who are bent on standing in the way of the development of the majority of his people.

‘To me this is a simple question of the abuse of the positions of service that some of these people have been placed in. I could not believe my own eyes when I saw a person who I know and respect as a nursing sister from the clinic;leading a protest action against the very same people who have worked so hard to bring us the good news,’ said Kgoshi Malatji.

He further said that the only way to deal with a matter like this is to ask the relevant government authority to assist in dealing with a situation of this nature. ‘I decided at that moment that enough is enough. I now understand and saw with my own eyes why a number of people in my village are opting to go to other clinics for their treatment,’ said Malatji DISRUPTED: A nursing sister from Salwane Clinic, in full uniform disrupted a proceedings during the

More than 3 000 community members of Ba Phalaborwa marched to the Namakgale Magistrate’s Court, demanding the release of 10 arrested fellow community members.

The ten community members were allegedly part of the mob that stoned to death two men, accusing them of being responsible for terrorizing the community of Mashishimale.

The Phalaborwa branch of the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) is requesting copies of old photographs from residents of Phalaborwa.

SAEON is conducting research into how the natural environmental around Phalaborwa has changed over the past 60 years, both inside and outside of the Kruger National Park.

‘We are particularly interested in bush encroachment or thickening of the Mopani bushveld, and the loss of large trees along the Selati and Olifants Rivers.

Repeat photography is a useful tool for describing and understanding these changes,

provided that a new photo can be taken from the same location as a historical photo, and provided the date of the historical photo is known,’ said Tony Swemmer.

Anyone willing to share old photos that were taken before 1995, should please contact Martie van der Westhuizen at the SAEON offi ces, on 013 735 3534, or [email protected]. ALGEMEENPHALABORWA HERALD Friday August 29, 2014 7

The young man who was born and raised in Lulekani is fl ying high the fl ag of Phalaborwa. He’s a diverse artist that paints a story that gives you a perspective of his environment.

What makes him stand out from the crowd is that he delivers his lyrical punches in Xitsonga. X-Man released an album called ‘Pursuit of happiness’ and a music video which will be showed on MTVBase, Channel

O and Trace soon. He started singing in 2006 after completing

his matric and focused on making a career out of music. ‘I love music so much,’ he reveals and adds that he was born in the rural village of Matiko Xikaya where he currently resides.

His songs are about personal experiences and what happens in his environment. I also give advice here and there through my music, and by the look of things, I will continue singing this type of music as it is proving very popular,’ said X-Man.

He said one of his songs is dedicated to the late Paul Ndlhovu who was popularly known for his Xitsonga music and was born and

raised in Lulekani. He showed his gratitude to Donald Shayi also known as Dido, the man who mixed and mastered his songs, his mentor and manager as well. X-Man advised upcoming artists to be real and not imitate established artists. ‘Be original, you will get somewhere in life. God made us differently with our unique talents,’ added X-Man.

He wants to be an international artist and compete with the best in the world, there is no limit. ‘I want him to bring home a South African Music Award (SAMA), then that’s when I will say we have achieved,’ said Dido.

He further said that X-Man should stay humble and focused on achieving his goals

including God in all his plans. The 10-track album was recorded at Thug Unit Records and composed by various producers, Mal-Jay, K16 (BeatGod), Dido and Dope C.

X-Man has an imprint called Thug Unit Dope Music Records where he will be signing a number of artists and producers.

He was on SABC 2 morning live show where he shared the stage with AKA performing the singles from his album, Machangani, Its Alright & Paul Ndhlovu. The Department of Health in the Mopani District in partnership with the traditional healers hosted a HIV/ Aids and TB screening campaign at Lulekani Community Hall on Thursday.

The campaign, which aimed to create a relationship between healers and the formal health care sector through these screenings, found most healers were keen to work with health workers. Researchers also found 84 percent of TB patients would rather have a traditional healer as a treatment supervisor than public health supervisors.

About 40 percent disclosed that they had been seen by a healer at some point before their diagnosis.

Deputy manager: home community based care, stakeholder coordinator and Acsm, Grace Tshilidzi Ramathavha, said they encourage people to know their status. ‘If you have tested negative make it a point that you stay negative but if you’ve tested positive take treatment and lead a healthy life,’ said Ramathavha.

She said that during the screening they check for blood sugar, hypertension, MMC, TB. She further said that they host other health activities to promote an HIV free country. Speaking on behalf of traditional healers, Ephraim Masutha, said it is important that they work together with professional health workers.

‘There are some sicknesses that we cannot cure so we advice our patients to go to health care practitioners and get treatment from clinics,’ said Masutha.

Research has found traditional healers could serve as credible supporters to patients on TB treatment. Healers are believed to serve a large number of people who might have TB, particularly in rural areas. Some of the healers said they were offered training previously to know signs and symptoms of TB, have counselling skills and learned how to manage treatment defaulters. Phalaborwa home based care givers gave fruits to all that attended the event.

Lulekani home based care givers handed out fruits to all that att ended the event at Lulekani Community Hall last Thursday.

Health practi ti oners from various areas in Mopani District Municipality att ended the event at Lulekani Community Hall last Thursday.

MERIDIAN ECO LEARNERS: A group of learners cleaned the community of Phalaborwa during their Eco club period. “It is amazing for us to know we can teach the children about nature and animals”, said Hannes Faber.

Some learners of Meridian College have spent their Friday afternoon, 22 August, to contribute not only for the community, but also for themselves – cleaning the community of Phalaborwa.

The meaning of an eco club is a group who works to contribute to improving environmental conditions. They offer activities to encourage others to reduce pollution, plant trees, and many more. Hannes Faber is the teacher in charge of the program, but ensures that any teacher, who wants to be part of it, can participate.

“This club teaches our children how to be eco friendly as well as loving the environment around them”, stated Faber. “Learners are not forced to participate. They join the club by choice”.

Every Friday on a weekly basis, something else is planned for them. Meridian College wants to teach everything about the

environment through this club, not only educating the learners of nature, but also animals.

“With this particular day, the learners was taught what pollution can do to the environment as well as the dangers it can cause to animals”, said Faber. Erica Malatji was the teacher who accompanied the learners on Friday and said she enjoyed it just as much as the learners did.

When the club was instituted at the school, only six learners took part in it. The club has increased tremendously to a number of 30 learners.

“This project has been successful in teaching our learners the value of nature and increasing awareness. We want to challenge other schools to institute the program in order to build awareness amongst all learners, to create a proud Phalaborwa”, Faber concluded.

PUZZLESCODEBREAKER

Codebreakers require inspired guesswork. They are crosswords without

clues. Every letter of the alphabet is used (you might find it useful to

cross out the letters located by the grid as you find them) and each letter

has its own number. In this puzzle ‘23’ has the letter ‘B’, so a useful start

is to insert 'B’ in all the boxes that contain the number '23'. Vowels

appear at least once in a word but letters such as ‘X’ and ‘Z’ are few.

NUMBERSEARCHWithin this grid are hidden the numbers below.

They are found horizontally, vertically, diagonally

and back-to-front.

SCHOOL NEWSPHALABORWA HERALD Friday August 29, 2014 15

Majeje High wins SASFA U/16 CupMajeje High school from Ba-

Phalaborwa emerged as provincial champions of South African Schools Football Association (SASFA) Under 16 Cup at the weekend.

This after humiliating a star studded Phakgameng High school 5-0 in the provincial fi nals at the new Jane Furse Legacy Stadium in the Sekhukhune District on

Saturday.The School will now represent

the province at the national Finals, scheduled for December at the venue still to be decided.

“South Africa indeed has talent, there are many rough diamonds all over the country, what we need is a serious talent identifi cation mechanism that will draft into the

football systems all these stars so that they are properly channelled to shine and play a proper role in making South Africa a power house of youth football in the continent thus the vision 2024 espoused by SAFA will be a reality” said Mandla ‘Shoes’ Mazibuko.

The teams were divided into two streams and played on a round robin

basis as SASFA promotes maximum exposure to the teams where they are encouraged to play more regular and it is deemed unfair for a school to travel more than 300 km just to play one match and return home. With the round robin system each school has more chance to improve their standing then advance to the next level.

The results were as follows; Stream A: Centauri High 2, Majeje High 2; Centauri High 3, Ngwana Kwena High 0; Ngwana Kwena High 0, Majeje 6.

Stream B: Phakgameng High 4, Mohlaohle 2; Mohlalaohle High 0, Phakgameng 2.

Final: Majeje 5 , Phakgameng 0.
