9-13 September About EU PVSEC
The EU PVSEC is the largest international conference for photovoltaic research, technologies and applications, and at the same time a top international PV Industry Exhibitions. It gathers the global PV community to conduct business, to network and to present and discuss the latest developments and innovations in photovoltaics. It is the world-renowned science-to-science, business-to-business and science-to-industry platform with a full and only focus on the global PV Solar sector. The European Commission established the first of these conferences in 1981 (held at Stresa, Italy). Since 1996 the Joint Research Centre supports the conference by providing the scientific programme coordination. The EU PVSEC 2019 was hosted in Marseille. The 36th edition of this conference and exhibition offered again an excellent opportunity to keep abreast of the latest market, technical and scientific developments in the fast-changing solar business.
16-20 September ELINDER Specific Course in Metrology for Radioactive Waste Characterisation and Clearance
The ELINDER course on Metrology for Radioactive Waste Characterisation and Clearance took place at the JRC
Site in Ispra (Italy). The objective of the course was to provide participants with the main elements of the
knowledge and competence that is required for decommissioning activities, and namely radioactive waste
characterisation and clearance. The course included hands-on exercises with the most common measurement
21
devices and laboratory analysis techniques.
17 September Natural risk managemen - Austria
The event dealt with natural hazards and ways of handling them, also in a cross-border perspective. Starting from an analysis of existing legislation, the event lead to amendments based on scientific evidence.
17-19 September Genetics in support of fisheries and aquaculture management
The JRC, together with the Denmark-based International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, University of
Washington (US), Bangor University (UK) and DTU Aqua (DK) gave a training course on genetics in support of
fisheries and aquaculture management, which was based on theory, application and strategy. The course
introduced the principles and practical application of genetics in fisheries and aquaculture, including relevant
evolutionary, quantitative- and population genetic theory, a range of genetic and genomic tools that underpin
the management of aquatic natural resources, and how such approaches complement other management
tools, together with a critical valuation of costs and benefits. Case studies were provided that illustrate how
genetics can help to address existing management and policy needs from capture and aquaculture fisheries.
Emphasis on the practical implication of technologies and theory underpinned course design and delivery.
19-20 September Conference: Digitally enabled development for a sustainable future in Eastern Europe
Climate change adaptation and mitigation, rapid urbanisation, increasing natural disasters, migration issues,
and unresolved humanitarian conflicts... how can digital technologies, data, related policies and legislation
help address these complex challenges that today’s world is facing? More than 200 experts from 21 countries
and 12 international organisations gathered in Vrdnik, Republic of Serbia, to discuss this question and its
particular relevance for the region at a conference on “Digitally enabled development for a sustainable future
in Eastern Europe”. This two-day event brought together a variety of experts from the public and private
sector, civil society, academia, intergovernmental organisations to discuss challenges and opportunities in the
implementation of digital technologies, exchange good practices in digital transformation, establish
partnerships, and learn from each other. Particular emphasis was on technological enablers of digital
transformation, digital data, good tenure governance, and innovative services and applications combined with
a focus on regional and national spatial planning, next generation farming, smart cities and governance of
land tenure.
23-27 September Workshop: Extreme Events and Energy Transitions- Tackling the Challenges of Climate Change by Integrating Social and Complex Systems Science
Human activities exposes us to ever more frequent extreme events such as:
power black-outs
droughts
22
extended floods
This poses challenges to energy sustainability and actions to tackle climate change through renewable energies. The workshop on extreme events and energy transitions aimed at exploring how enable important advancements in this area by:
Integration of complex system approaches with
Elements of social organisation and adaptation.
24 September Launch event: The changing nature of work and skills in the digital age
Social Media manager, Airbnb host, influencer, SEO specialist, app developer, Uber driver, driverless car engineer, podcast producer, drone operator. These are just some of the jobs that did not exist 10 years ago. What will come in the future? What will today's 10-year-olds do when they are 25? Which jobs will disappear? What new forms of work are emerging? Which new skills will be valuable in the job market? This and more could be explored at the launch event for the report "The changing nature of work and skills in the digital age". The report provides new insights on the interplay between automation, jobs and work organisation and how this affects skills in the EU.
24 September European HTCondor Workshop 2019
The JRC co-organised the 2019 edition of the European HTCondor Workshop. It took place at the JRC Ispra. HTCondor is an open-source high-throughput computing software framework for coarse-grained distributed parallelisation of computationally intensive tasks. It is used by NASA, CERN, Ligo, DESY, IceCube, INFN and
others. The JRC hosted the workshop on HTCondor. Previous editions took place at:
CERN in December 2014
ALBA in February 2016
DESY in June 2017
RAL in September 2018
Novice and experienced users of HTCondor received the opportunity to learn, get support and interact with the HTCondor developers and experts. The workshop was primarily aimed at users from EMEA, but others could also apply. The workshop consisted of presentations, tutorials and "office hours" for consultancy. The HTCondor CE (Compute Element) was prominently covered as well.
24 September Global Summit on Regulatory Science 2019 Nanotechnology and Nanoplastics
The Joint Research Centre co-organised with the Global Coalition for Regulatory Science Research (GCRSR) the Global Summit on Regulatory Science 2019 (GSRS19). The GSRS19 gathered scientists from government, industry, and academic-research communities from around the world for addressing regulatory-research questions concerning nanotechnology and nanoplastics. The focus was on topics in nanotechnology related to advances in standards, medical products/drugs, medical devices, food, cosmetic (personal care) products and the emerging pollutant nanoplastics. The conference provided a platform where regulators, policy makers, and bench scientists could exchange views on innovative methodologies and regulatory assessments, as well as
23
harmonising strategy via global collaboration.
24-26 September Theory 5- Scientific Workshop on Nuclear Fission Dynamics and the Emission of Prompt Neutrons and Gamma Rays
The workshop aimed at providing a comprehensive overview about the research on the dynamical aspects of nuclear fission and their consequences on fission fragment properties. It promoted the exchange between theoreticians and experimentalists on future data needs for basic research and applications. Contributions highlighted advancement of nuclear fission theory, with a focus on prompt neutron and gamma ray emission and state-of-the-art experiment techniques. It is the fifth workshop of a series initiated in 2010 (Sinaia, Romania) and continued in 2012 (Biarritz, France), 2014 (Opatija, Croatia) and 2017 (Varna, Bulgaria). Theory 5 was co-organised by JRC-Geel (Belgium) and the Romanian National Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering (NIPNE, Bucharest). The workshop was supported by the JRC-Geel and hosted at the Renaissance Tuscany Resort in Castelvecchio Pascoli (Italy).
