• Invite an apprentice who has completed their apprenticeship to talk to students about their

experience • Investigate school-based apprenticeships (what they are)

• Get students to describe their passion and what they enjoy, and then have them link what careers and vocational pathways they identify with, relating to that passion

• Organise for students to visit a TAFE institute and/or Registered Training Organisation (member of ACPET)

• Have students research quality Private Training Providers through the ACPET Catalogue

• Invite a representative from a Registered Training Organisation or Group Training Organisation to address students

• Invite a selection of employers who represent different industries to talk to students about their particular industry

• Invite an employer organisation representative from the National Farmers’ Federation, Australian Chamber of Commerce (ACCI) and Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) to address students

• Invite a winner of the State Training Awards or similar ambassador i.e. a WorldSkills competitor or an Apprentice of the Year winner etc., to address students

• Organise a parent and daughter dinner or night for attendees to be addressed by successful women who have succeeded in non-traditional trades. E.g. more women are going into engineering, electrical, building and construction, mining, and agriculture

• During National Skills Week, SkillsOne Television will be running programming opportunities and careers in the vocational sector on Foxtel (Aurora - Channel 183). Details of the programming and times will be found at www.skillsone.com.au

• If schools have VET courses, the school may consider organising a VET taster day where students can participate in 2 or 3 workshops held at school by VET teachers. This will give students a realist insight of what the course content involves before subject selection

• Invite SBAT students that are currently at school to address junior years about their SBAT experience, their study timetable and the opportunities that SBAT has provided

• Build relations with the community. Ask the local baker, butcher, florist etc. to attend school and talk to students about their industry. The industries past, present and future prospects. i.e. how has the industry change?

• In elective classes, encourage teachers to take their class on an industry visit. E.g. Hospitality - go to a bread-making factory. Woodwork - visit a furniture shop etc.

• Using the Job Guide (which is soon to be extinct) students research careers/industries that are not common. E.g. Blacksmith or some obscure careers they hadn’t heard of, then report back to class

• As a whole class activity, develop a word bank that describes Vocational Education. I.e. skills, hands on, learning, job security, well paid, opportunities etc.

• Ask students to map a parent, sibling, or cousins career pathway, then present it to the whole class. E.g. Dad: Completed a glazier apprenticeship after 4 years, worked with Johnson’s building supplies as a glazier for 7 years, opened his own business as a handyman, and is now his own boss.

• Research industries where there are female shortages. Use teaching resources from the Women NSW - Girls in Trades http://www.women.nsw.gov.au/women_and_work/girls_in_trades

Empower the girls in your school to select a non-traditional trade. Educate the boys at your school about the importance of equality that is necessary in all working environments.
