Spectroscopy in Astronomy

• One of the basic concepts in astrophysics. However… Spectroscopy is not familiar to most people.

Spectroscopic data can be seen as a image.

• Make an image from spectroscopic data!– Just the same as astronomers’ work!

• We have a tool to treat an image data!• Let’s use the HOU-IP!!

JAHOU textbook; contents outline

• Show minimal concepts to understand spectroscopy in astronomy.

• 4 chapters; what can we know about stars through spectroscopy?

• 12 sections; usable even for a short term course (often in Japan).

• Extendable to whole electromagnetic waves. Some sections are used radio astronomy data.

JAHOU textbook; tools

• PC program; HOU-IP– Measure spectra of actual astronomical data

• Plot graph (on paper sheet/use PC)– Find a relation

• Small experiments; confirm by themselves– Listen sounds with Doppler effect– Watch actual spectra

Experiments are required if the results are beyond their expects

JAHOU textbook; format

• 3 parts; like the HOU textbook– Main textbook

– Answer sheets

– Teachers note

• With a table showing relation of concepts– Usage for short term class

– As a component of a science course in school Tightly scheduled course at schools in Japan

Chapters in our textbook

• 4 chapters : target concepts– basic

color, spectrum, light wave, Doppler effect

– chemical composition– physical state; temperature & density– velocity & kinematics

Sections in Chapter 1

• 12 sections : usage for short course • Chapter 1: basic concepts

– Color and spectra Based upon our CD-ROM books “

space spectrum museum” by Awano et al.

– Spectra for various lights– Light as a wave– Doppler effect

Chapter 1

• example

Sections in Chapter 2

• Chapter 2: composition– Spectra of stars (continuum)– Spectra of nebulae (emission lines)

Chapter 2

• example

Sections in Chapter 3

• Chapter 3: physical state – temperature– Spectra of stars

Chapter 3

• example

Sections in Chapter 4

• Chapter 4: velocity and kinematics– Spin of Sun– Rotation of a galaxy– Hubble law– Supernova remnant as an expanding shell

Chapter 4

• example

Future works

• Feedback from trial report– Trial use in progress

• Add small assistant programs– Doppler simulator– Blackbody radiation viewer– Excitation simulator– etc.

• Translation into other languages– Only in Japanese

• Extend to include other topics– Only minimal topics
