Dear Parents/Guardians,
What a difficult and sharp learning curve we have all gone through. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our parents and especially our wonderful young pupils for enduring this difficult time and coming out stronger and wiser. Thank you for all the support you have offered your children and The Fordway Centre. Most importantly, thank you to the pupils for attending all the online lessons and completing your work packs. Our staff were so excited when home ‘eyes-on’ visits were done and we were pleased to see that you were safe and happy albeit during the lockdown. We would like to express our condolences to the Kingham/O’Brien family for the sad loss of their mother to Covid-19. The family is in our thoughts and prayers. We have now opened our school to the Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 pupils. It has been difficult to maintain our social distancing and we would have liked to have had all our pupils back at school but as you know our school is very small and our classrooms even smaller. However, we are thrilled that we will be able to open to all pupils in the new school year. I would like to thank Mole class and Miss Sileno for taking on an outreach project during lockdown to Uganda, (The Firmrock Children Helper Charity Organisation.) There is more in the newsletter. A special thank you to Michael Prichard, Kay Rai and others, who would like to remain anonymous for donating £493 to cover postage. A huge thank you to Mail Boxes ETC from Staines who offered the best price to ship our books and adding to the donations. We know that these books will be put to good use. Finally, we would like to wish our year 6 pupils, that are leaving our school at the end of the year, the absolute best. We know that they are going on to good schools and they will continue to make Fordway proud. I hope that everyone has a well-deserved holiday
Best Wishes
Linda Whitehorn

Doctor Choc’s Windsor Chocolate factory
What the students say...
“Pre -Covid 19”
KS1 and KS2 students have enjoyed a trip to Doctor Choc’s Windsor Chocolate factory.
This term student learnt about ‘Sweets and Treats’ for their topic.
The students had an opportunity to become familiar with the process of packaging design via
hands- on activity in which students learnt to design and assemble their very own chocolate
box with which to package the chocolates they have just made in the chocolate factory.
Unique chocolates in a uniquely designed box.
The highlight of the trip to the chocolate factory is the hands-on chocolate making
experience! Students learnt how to work with chocolate whilst making their very own
unique creations, e.g. Bars, truffles, dipped fruits, soft-centre chocolates etc. Choosing from
organic, sustainable and ethically sourced chocolate (milk, white and dark) along with 30
different ingredients with which to decorate.
At the end of the visit everyone’s delicious creations had set and are ready to be wrapped.
The students had a final question and answers session and a certificate. Students said it was a
great trip.

What the students say…
“Pre -Covid 19”
Curriculum day - R.S.E.
Our curriculum day this term consisted of three activities.
Friendship characteristics- Students made friendship bracelets and a ‘What makes a good friend’
poster, to encourage students to have a greater understanding of what it means to be a good
friend.
Kindness-Students put a heart in a jar with kind words about each other. Students were taught to
understand that in school and in a wider society they can expect to be treated with respect by
others.
The importance of friendships- Students participated in a blindfolded obstacle course in pairs and
worked as a team. Also, in 3’s students had to rescue teddy from the other side of the playground
without stepping on the ground (imaginary acid water) with only having 4 pieces of card for all
three students to work with. The students learnt to trust others and build friendships.

What is going on at KS1 “Pre -Covid 19”
Sweets & Treats
This term Thames class have been learning about
Sweets & Treats for their Topic. The students have
made Gingerbread and chocolate Truffles.
Also, a trip to the local Tesco’s to choose some fruit
to make a smoothie. They chose their ingredients of
three different fruits each, which were liquidized to
make a delicious smoothie.
The smoothies were enjoyed by all, not forgetting the
trip to Doctor Choc’s Windsor Chocolate factory;
check out the pictures on page 7.
Our word of the week programme is extremely
popular with all the students. Thames class used the
weekly new word ‘laborious’ in their work and
remembered the word all that week, this was rewarded
with a drink of hot chocolate. Well done Thames class!
Delicious Hot
Chocolate!

What’s going on at KS2? “Pre -Covid 19”
Mole class
The students in Mole class have been learning about Sweets & Treats also for their Topic. They
have looked at the stories; ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and ‘Hansel & Gretel’.
Also, they have been learning about Cocoa; where it comes from, when it was discovered and not
forgetting what it is used for.
The students have enjoyed making a Hansel and Gretel house made from sweets and some great
hand puppets.
Also, this term the students visited the local Tesco store to buy items to learn about different tastes
such as sweet, salty, bitter and sour. They bought sweets, crisps, fresh limes, popcorn and drinks.
It was a fun lesson especially tasting their purchases. The overall favourite taste was the sweet
taste.

What is going on in KS2? “Pre -Covid 19”
Ash class
Ash class have been busy learning about chocolate this term for their Topic Sweets & Treats.
The students have learnt about the ‘Mayan Indians’ and their involvement in chocolate.
Apparently, the Mayans are one of the oldest civilisations on the American continent and were
the first people to grow cocoa trees.
They consumed chocolate by first harvesting the seeds or beans from Cocoa trees. They then
were fermented and dried out, then roasted, their skins were removed, and the beans were
ground into a paste.
The Mayan Indians and the Aztecs used the cocoa beans as a barter currency to exchange for
food or clothes, as well as for preparing a bitter drink, known as Xocoatl, which was nothing
like the hot chocolate we drink today.
In Literacy lessons the students have been reading the book; Charlie and the chocolate factory
and have been describing the chocolate room.
Further thinking
One student which has been learning about Sweets & Treats for their Topic and attended the
Doctor Choc Windsor day where he learnt how chocolate is made. He remarked that he would
like to one day when he is older go to Ghana and buy a Cocoa plantation. He would pay the
workers decent wages. Also, he would not use Palm oil in the process of making chocolate
because the trees are cut down to make the oil. The animals need the trees to survive. This is a
great vision for a student to have and to stretch his thinking.

Gardening club “Pre -Covid 19”
Lunchtime Gardening club
Miss Sileno started a Gardening club this term
on Mondays and Tuesdays during lunchtime.
The students have been clearing leaves,
planting bulbs and seeds.
They have been using gardening equipment,
such as shovels, rakes and troughs. This has
proved a popular activity.
It has been great to see the transformation of
the grounds during this time. Tulips have been
planted in flower beds and herbs such as basil,
parsley, radishes, chives and coriander.
Students have been learning how to care for
something and have been taking turns to water
them. It has been amazing for students to see
how something can grow from a seed.

Fundraising
Heartflow.org.za– Helping the Homeless
This term the school council decided to raise money for the homeless
in other countries. This charity helps all the homeless by providing
them with vital equipment and help.
Thanks to Heartflow the public is now able to help homeless and
hungry people in a sustainable, holistic way by connecting them with
local non-profit companies.
NEWS FLASH!
Due to the recent outbreak, of the Corona virus. Some students and staff have isolated
themselves, so with our numbers being down we have decided to postpone our fundraising
till the Autumn term.

Books to Uganda
During our lockdown and having pupils in school, we
did a survey of all the old resources available at school.
We found that there were resources that there no
longer used. Pupils and staff set to work to find a way
to donate these resources to other schools that have a
need. Miss Sileno found a charity in Uganda. She set to
work, found donations and we are happy to say that
four boxes of Maths textbooks are on their way.
http://www.firmrockhelper.org/index.html Outreach Project sending books and resources to
Uganda Firmrock to help underprivledged children.
Incorporated in mathematics working out weights and
amounts of books per box
An excessively big Thankyou to our sponsors Kay Rai who
sponsored the postage. Also, Majid Ali in South Africa, a
sponsor in Norway and a few anonymous sponsors. These
people made the process happen. Thankyou!
