Setting the scene

• “A submarine. It had emerged from the sea with the speed and the impossibility of a huge stage illusion.”

• this quote sets the scene, tells the reader where the characters are

• the use of the short sentence shocks the reader, it also has rhythm as you read this.

• “In the cold morning air. Even without the half- moon”

• this sets the time of the scene, and also it tells the reader that the season of the passage.

Imagery

• “The shape of the diving plane slashing horizontally through the conning tower and the shark’s tail rudder at the back was like nothing he had ever seen.”

• “slashing” shows the destructiveness and power of the submarine. the use of the adverb, “horizontally” contrasts the “tower”, as the tower is vertical.

• “shark” again shows the power of the submarine, it also shows the reader the size of the submarine.

Quotes• “Alex felt very small and very young. Whatever was

going on here, he knew he was way out of his depth.”

• this shows his inexperience, shows that he is still a child.

• use of the words “very” amplifies his insecurity of his knowledge which is later further emphasized with the word “depth”

• The submarine had no markings, but Alex knew it wasn’t english

• it sets a background knowledge for the reader about Alex’s upbringing.

• “no markings” makes the reader want to continue to read on, it sets suspense about the mysterious submarine
