Guests at the ninth annualKicks for a Cure benefit scoreda big goal for local cancer re-search and education.

The weekend event, heldApril 11-12, drew more than 550attendees to the Friday nightdinner and auction held at theOmaha DoubleTree.

Sticking with the outdoor soc-cer theme, tables were adornedwith bright yellow, lime-greenand blue paper lanterns withfresh white hydrangeas andbutterfly- and flower-shaped pla-cemats, designed by Old MarketHabitat. Vases of yellow, whiteand green mums completed thelook.

Following a social hour, achoice of baked cod with lemoncaper sauce or chicken breastwith Marsala wine sauce, ricepilaf and broccolini was served.

The keynote speaker wasMiss Teen Missouri Interna-tional Sara Moore, who at age15 was diagnosed with LynchSyndrome, a genetic conditionthat puts her at increased riskfor developing cancer.

“A lot of people don’t knowanything about Lynch Syn-drome, so I feel like it’s my re-sponsibility to share my story,”Moore said.

Lynch Syndrome is namedfor Dr. Henry Lynch, director ofthe Hereditary Cancer Centerat Creighton University andhonored guest at the benefit.

Steve Lindsay, president ofthe Kicks for a Cure Board ofDirectors, presented the Inspi-ration Award to Amy Deardorffand the late Cindy Leiferman fortheir impact on the organization.

On Saturday, college and highschool exhibition soccer match-es were played at CreightonUniversity’s Morrison SoccerStadium.

Proceeds from the weekendbenefit Liz’s Legacy CancerFund. The David Karnes familyserved as honorary chairmen.Co-chairwomen for the weekendwere Kayla Howard and SusanMcGillick.

A record-setting amount of$320,000 was raised, bringingthe nine-year total to $1.75 mil-lion dollars for cancer researchand education split by the Fredand Pamela Buffett Cancer Cen-ter and Creighton’s HereditaryCancer Center.

A sell-out crowd of more than400 gathered for the 17th annualCathedral Comedy and Cuisinebenefit on April 5. The eveningfeatured dinner, silent and oralauctions and videos of the schoolchildren.

More than $180,000 was raisedto support the mission of St. Ce-cilia School. Auction highlightswere a golf outing with Creigh-ton University men’s basketballcoach Greg McDermott, dinnerwith University of Nebras-ka-Lincoln men’s basketballcoach Tim Miles and a DreamDay at Wrigley Field. TravisJustice served as auctioneer.

All eight adult children ofMary and Bill Lindsay were onhand as their family receivedthe Great Cathedral Familyaward. The Great Stewardaward was presented to Aliceand Dorothy Lammers for theirefforts in social justice and civicoutreach.

The 2014 Cattlemen’s Ball ofNebraska has set a goal of rais-ing $2.5 million for cancer re-search for the Fred and PamelaBuffett Cancer Center as well asother regional medical causes.

Themed Corral a Cure, theevent will take place June 6-7at the Hoot Owl Ranch nearHarrisburg in Banner County inthe Nebraska Panhandle. Hostfamilies are Kathy and Jeff Mayand Misty and Kenny Stauffer.Co-chairmen are Jeff Heldt andMonty Stoddard.

“In order to reach our goal, itwill take support from all cor-ners of Nebraska,” Heldt said.“Every community can make adifference.”

More than 600 volunteers areneeded.

By tradition, the ball is heldat a different ranch each year toincrease cancer awareness andshowcase rural Nebraska. Theevent includes auctions, a golftournament, an art show and aSaturday night dinner with aconcert by country singer Mont-gomery Gentry. Dancing to the5 to Life Band will follow.
