from decision-makers & community, effective management, evaluation & modification of strategies)

Create Organizational Message

scope of activities & priority population

Longer than mission statement (less than 1 page)

Used to promote coalition, seek funding, recruit members & make others want to learn more

Develop & Sustain Material Resources

Think broadly about resources - more than $

Match resources to strategies - fundraising event IS change strategy

Develop champions & supporters - Keep volunteers productive, invest in training, recognize everyone’s efforts

Prepare coalition for opportunities - Connect with legislators/funders; hire grant writer; move FAST

Diverse Resources

1. Membership dues 2. Line item budget allocations 3. Fund-raising events 4. Individual & business donors 5. Partner financial & in-kind contributions 6. Local community grants & contracts 7. Fees for Service

Coalitions: Social Enterprises?

• Organizations that provide money-making goods & services AND have social improvement mission

• “Double-bottom-line” businesses

• Create better social value for participants

• Proactive decision-making & risk-taking

Sullivan, Mort, Weerawardena & Carnegie, 2003

Incorporate or Not?

• Advantages Establishes clear identity for coalition Tax exempt status allows donations & lobbying

• Disadvantages Time & effort – 6 months; need attorney Incorporation & fiscal reporting Initial Fee - $2500; Annual Fee - $750 Regularly convene board & must formally disband

501(c)(3) Status

• May NOT participate in or influence political campaigns - risk losing tax-exempt status

• May engage in voter education activities during political campaigns – Get statements from candidates – Conduct public forums – Give testimony on party platforms – Provide issue briefings for candidates

BoardSource, 2002

Resource Development Plan

• Guided by Resource Team: Coalition ED, Chair(s) & members with financial expertise

• Evaluate coalition & its resources – money, people, goods & services

• Decide on funding possibilities & strategies

• List tasks & deadlines - divide tasks among staff & members
