Greetings My Sorors:

I initially planned to begin this month’s article with the words, “Welcome to Spring”! However, if you step outside right now, you would think Mother Nature forgot that she dropped winter in the mornings and summers in the afternoon; off here in Oklahoma a few months ago and you wouldn’t you also know that she has failed to return to retrieve these temps! The chapter is SOOOOO busy! With programs such as

ASCEND, 20 Pearls Scholarship Program and the upcoming 5K Run/Walk, just to mention a few, you realize that there is something for EVERYONE! I want to offer a special thanks to our diligent Chairman and their committees for working so hard to keep Beta Sigma Omega “Supreme in Service”!

At our March meeting, we are excited to welcome the Sorors of the Beta Beta Chapter. Complying with our Undergraduate/Graduate Strategic Plan, we will conduct tabletop exercises with them prior to sorority meeting at 10:15am.Thank you Soror Tracy Smith and Graduate Advisors Council, on your diligence in working with our undergraduates.

This month, we will highlight all LEGACIES within the chapter. Please wear your favorite outfit, capped with a smile, to representative your family legacy. Photos will be taken throughout the meeting.

In the midst of such a busy time in the chapter, I have paused more than a few times to reflect on a scripture found in Luke 6:38, which states: “Give and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” This scripture puts into focus everything that we do and the reasons why we do it. Our community needs us to give as much as we can in order for them to continue to thrive. As a result of our giving, we have been justly rewarded with members who are kind, committed, and caring by continuing to reactivate and all working towards the better good of this chapter and of the community. I could not be more blessed to have all of you! Last, but not least, to all of you who assisted in making Pink Hearts Go Red, a success, I applaud your valiant effort. National Wear Red Day-”Go Red for Women” and the sorority meeting was absolutely beautiful and represented all that our Founders’ would have wanted to see 108 years later……focal point on health, real love and sisterhood! As we prepare for Easter, let’s be reminded of the higher power that keeps us and maintains us and who has made the ultimate sacrifice for us to live so freely! Continue to serve as a beacon of light in the dark for all others to follow.

Sorors In The Know

This month we highlight Target IV: Environmental Ownership and the Acts of Green Program. Sorors are encouraged to promote environ-

mental sustainability by encouraging recycling, litter prevention and waste management through daily green efforts in local communities.

Some examples of random acts of green include:

Picking up trash at a park, camping area or on the side of the road Turning off a light at work like a conference room or restroom, if no one is in there Donating your used or unwanted clothing to charitable organizations Printing double-sided when using a copy machine Bringing your own reusable bag to the store so you don’t waste the paper or plastic bags

they offer Use a mug instead of a disposable plastic or paper cup Turn off your computer at work when you leave Start a carpool at work with people who live near you

According to recent studies, if every adult in the USA did just one random act of green every day, it would amount to over billions of actions per year.

At the March 12, 2016 sorority mee ng: The finance commi ee will handle transac ons one‐half hour prior to the mee ng (10:30am) and one‐half hour a er the mee ng.

It is helpful to review the responsibili es of a delegate prior to the Mid‐Western Regional Conference.

***Delegate Du es and Responsibili es*** 1. A delegate shall a end the conference from the opening plenary to the closing plenary. 2. Delegates must support the posi on(s) and candidate(s) endorsed by the chapter. 3. The chapter may authorize the delegates to select candidate(s) or posi on(s) by caucus. Once the posi‐on or candidate is endorsed by the chapter or delegate caucus, a delegate shall not campaign for an op‐

posing posi on or candidate. 4. If a delegate is unable to fulfill her expected du es, she shall contact the Basileus for her release and the assignment of an alternate. 5. If a delegate is unable to fulfill her expected du es, she shall return the en re delegate s ‐pend within 60 days of the close of the conference. 6. A wri en delegate report shall be submi ed to the chapter Basileus within 30 days of the close of the conference. AKA Protocol Reminders The following protocol reminders have been developed for the 86th Mid-Western Regional Conference. All sorors are encouraged to review the reminders prior to the conference, in order to ensure adherence to our Sorority’s protocol standards.

ATTIRE

Business attire is required for the conference, unless otherwise noted. Sorors are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes throughout the conference. Flip flops, house shoes, sneakers are

prohibited and unacceptable, unless under direction from a physician for medical reasons. Conservative, solid seasonal white dress with sleeves or skirt suit with coordinated white blouse is required for Ivy Beyond

the Wall Ceremony. Pants are prohibited. White, off-white, or flesh tone hosiery is required for all rituals during conference. Coordinated white shoes are appropriate. Black shoes, sandals, and boots are unacceptable.

Hats and head coverings are prohibited during rituals unless for religious or medical reasons. The Alpha Kappa Alpha badge is the official insignia worn by a member. The badge is worn over the heart on the outer

garment of clothing nearest the body. The badge is never worn with formal attire, slacks/pant suits, sports attire or shorts. When in doubt don’t wear the Alpha Kappa Alpha badge.

The signature jewelry of Alpha Kappa Alpha is a single strand of pearls. Conference Philacters and event hostesses will enforce required attire. Sorors inappropriately dressed will not be admitted.

CREDENTIALS

Sorors must wear their conference badge for all meetings and events. Only members with badges will be admitted to plenary sessions. Voting delegates must wear delegate identification and arrive early for proper seating.

VERY SPECIAL GUESTS Stand for the procession of dais members. Stand when the Regional Director enters the room and when she is introduced. Stand when the Supreme Basileus and Former Supreme Basilei enter the room, and when they are introduced. Refrain from walking during the introduction of dais guests and program participants, the mediation, or while the Regional

Director or Supreme Basileus is giving her address to the delegation. Allow the Very Special Guests expedited access to meeting rooms, elevators, escalators, and restrooms. Ask our Very Special Guests permission for photo opportunities

FORMS OF ADDRESS Please speak after being recognized by the presiding officer. Please address the presiding officer as “Madam Regional Director” or “Madam Supreme Basileus”. Use the appropriate greeting when addressing the presiding officer and delegation. Address the delegation by clearly stating your name, chapter, chapter location, and whether you are a delegate or non-

delegate.

AKA Protocol Reminders - (continued) RESERVED SEATING Respect designated seating sections. Designated seating will include, but is not limited to, seating for delegates, Diamond,

Golden, and physically challenged sorors, and very special guests not seated on the dais. Please honor reserved seating signage. Removal of reserved seating signage is prohibited, and may result in dismissal from

the event. Seating will be available for all sorors on a first come, first served basis. Holding seats at any function is unacceptable. Phi-

lacters and hostesses will assist in locating available seating.

COMMUNICATION, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIAL MEDIA

Turn off all electronic communication devices that will interrupt the meeting. Please step out of the meeting if you must use the phone.

Using electronic devices to record business meetings (audio or video) for posting on social media, in public, or sharing with nonfinancial sorors is prohibited.

Use discretion when posting on social media. Forums open to the public are not the appropriate venue to discuss sorority business. Sorors are encouraged to utilize the Soror Code of Ethics as a guide when using electronic media.

Photos during rituals are strictly prohibited.

GENERAL Make arrangements for child care and guests when attending business meetings, as these meetings are for sorors only. Arrive on time for meetings and events. Pay all late fines in a timely manner. Sorors should follow the lead of the presiding officer when singing the Hymn. Sorors should not cross arms when singing the Hymn in public. Sorors should not sway while singing the Hymn. The Hymn

should be sung at a brisk pace. The use of the pinkie gesture and “Skee Wee” call by undergraduate and graduate sorors is prohibited during official Alpha

Kappa Alpha business settings

Soror Jacque Jemison's brother, Mr. James R. Norris, Jr., passed. The memorial service was held at Concord Church at 10:30am on Friday, February 19, 2016.

Soror Sherrye Cravens had outpatient foot surgery and is recovering well.

Soror Alberta Harris became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on Friday, February 19, 2016. The Ivy Beyond The Wall Service was held on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at Temple and Sons Funeral Home and the funeral on Friday, February 26 at Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Soror Marie Walker is in need of your prayers for healing. She had bronchitis. Brenda Walker’s cousin, Billy Dan Jones, passed. Services will be in Mississippi, Saturday, February 5, 2016. Please keep the family in prayer. Let’s us continue to pray for all sorors. Sorors who have been on our previous prayer list, family members and others who we are quietly aware of, that need our continuous prayer. Great things HAPPEN after PRAYER!

Soror Accomplishments Dr. Teressa Hunter Named Acting Dean for School of Nursing and Health Professions I am proud to announce that Dr. Teressa Hunter has been named the Acting Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Profes-sions. Soror Hunter has served the School for more than 15 years and previously served as the Director for the School of Nursing since 2010. Her research interest include: HIV among African American women and critical thinking among nursing students. She has been published in the Journal of Rehabilitation and the Journal of Cultural. The Oklahoma Nurses Association and Journal of Black Nurses Association have also published articles authored by Dr. Hunter. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Hunter in her new position! Soror Carolyn J. Gray who received John A. Reed Spirit of the Community Award, presented at Fairview Baptist Church, during

the Black History Program on February 28, 2016, at the 11:00 hour.

Congratulations to Soror Sue Starr, Principal of NE Academy, for hosting our 42nd POTUS, Bill Clinton and to Soror Anastasia A. Pittman for having the honor to introduce him as a guest in her District 48 on Sunday, February 21, 2016.

Sorors marched to the polls on Super Tuesday, March 1, 2016 to exercise their right to vote. A sisterly congratulation is in order for Soror Anastasia Pittman-Pitre who was elected as the Democratic nominee for the Oklahoma County Court Clerk’s vacant seat.

The Health Committee conducted the Heart360 blood pressure program from the American Heart Association. Please continue to enrolled and track your blood pressure.

Celebrations

Ivy Beyond the Wall, Soror Nancy R. Davis’s Day was held on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at the beautiful campus of Oklahoma

State University – OKC. The salute to a hero and true pioneer for Civil Rights as the first African American enrollee at OSU was

presented by the Black Student Association.

Soror Candice Milard was the guest speaker for the 6th Annual Greek Sunday held at Greater Cleaves Memorial CME Church on

February 21, 2016. The purpose of this event is to hear about the contributions of the Divine Nine in African American History.

Announcements It is that time again for the Twenty Pearl Luncheon! It will be held on April 16 at the Langston University Oklahoma City Campus. Tickets

will be $15.00 each and can be purchased at the March Sorority meeting. The Education Committee is looking to make this a grand event and looks forward to your support.

The Oklahoma African American Educators Hall of Fame is accepting 2016 Nominations. Qualification details and nomination forms are online at www.oaaehof.org. Nominations must be postmarked by June 10, 2016. The Induction Ceremony will be held September 30, 2016 at the Oklahoma History Center in OKC.

AKA, Advocacy Day at the Capitol will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at the Oklahoma State Capitol Building. The time is 8:30am – 2:00pm in your Chapter jackets or pink. Pre-registration must be received or postmarked by Wednesday, April 15, 2016. The cost for Graduates is $25 and Undergraduates $15. (Includes lunch, photos, and materials while supplies last)

The real LU (Langston University) is not being represented at the basketball game to raise funds for EAF. Currently there are no players or a coach. The real LU does not want to lose by default so please share, until we get involved. If interested contact Soror Aanje Wilkerson at aanje@sbcglobal.net. If you would like to purchase EAF raffle tickets, one for $15 or two for $25 monies can be given to Soror Ameyka Pittman. This is an effort to see which school can raise the most monies.

The Leadership Development Training courses will be offered at 10:45am, Module 1 & 4 presented by Sorors Deborah Burroughs and Maggie W. Green; 1st Quarter 2016. Please come out to learn more about the interworking of our sorority and sorority documents.

Join the fun! *Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and Africare are partnering with Little Dresses for Africa to create an opportunity for so rors to help young girls in Africa. The pillowcase dress service project allows sorors to work together, independently or even with family members to make little dresses for communities in South Africa and Liberia. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is taking on the challenge to bring 29,000 pillowcase dresses to the 2016 Boule. Following the Boule, the dresses will be shipped directly to pre-selected communities in Africa. An article and photos of our donations will be featured in an Ivy Leaf following the Boule.
