Main idea: Tennessee if divided into three major regions. Each

regions has its own special features and landforms.

The Three Grand Divisionsof Tennessee

• East

• Middle

• West

East Tennessee

East Tennessee has four main landform types:

• Mountains ( The Smokeys)• Valleys (The Great Valley)• Hills and Plateaus ( The Cumberland Plateau)

East Tennessee has the beautiful Smoky Mountains

Also the Cumberland Plateau

Due to the many areas of high lands and drop offs….

• There are many waterfalls in the eastern part of the state

Natural Resource

• Coal and other minerals are very important. Eastern Tennessee is rich in both.

The Great Valley

• When you have mountains you also have valleys.

• To the west of the Smoky Mountains you have The Great Valley.

The Great Valley

• The Great Valley has very good, rich soil to grow crops.

• One important crop is Tobacco.

Middle Tennessee

The Nashville Basin

• Middle Tennessee has land that is shaped like a basin. A basin is low in the middle and high around the edges.

Farmers

• Much of Middle Tennessee is used by farmers to grow livestock.

Water is a very important natural resource for Middle Tennessee

The Tennessee River

• The Tennessee River is one of the most important rivers in our state. Many rivers run into it.

• The Tennessee River runs through Tennessee twice!

West

Plains

• West Tennessee is mostly a plain.

• A plain is a flat land.

The Mississippi Rivera natural border

• The Mississippi River makes up the western border of Tennessee

River City

• You probably have gone to see The Mississippi River since we live so close to it!

Crops in West Tennessee

• The soil so close to the Mississippi River is very fertile.

• Many crops are grown in the area.

Reelfoot Lake

• West Tennessee has one of the state’s best known lakes, Reelfoot Lake.

Reelfoot Lake

• Reelfoot Lake was formed in 1811 by an earthquake that shook the area causing the Mississippi River to go backwards and form the lake.

Eagles

• The bald eagle loves to build nests in the Reelfoot Lake area

Tennessee’s Flag

• The three white stars on Tennessee’s flag represent the three grand divisions.

• The white circle around them represents how they are one
