• 71% ‐ access to the internet from home

• 21% ‐ fixed access through phones and TV deals

• 78% of people unwilling to access internet elsewhere

• Find a way to create community owned access to the WWW

• Limited experience in UK of community owned access

• MVH did not want to be a provider of digital services

• We looked to Spain and Guifi.net

sustainable broadband networks – not for private profit but for social benefit – in areas of 

deprivation and market failure.”

Pilot ‐ Gellideg

• Digital Merthyr working with:‐– Gellideg Foundation, – Coed Y Dderwen– Creative Co‐ops

• Developed concept with MTCBC, NHS, Job centre

• Funded by Merthyr Valleys Homes and Nominet Trust

Technical solution

• Digital Merthyr working with the Gellideg Foundation, Coed Y Dderwen Creative Co‐ops

• Funded by MVH and Nominet Trust

• Developed concept with MTCBC, NHS Job centre

• Local digital champions

• Guifi.net came to Merthyr and designed the technology

• Our Digital inclusion officer completed his training

• Engineers and Nick on site next month

• Should be a live pilot after Xmas

Implementation

• Delays whilst we sourced funding• Technically challenging• We await further challenge on state aid• We still might have planning issues• It might not work
