…is to promote the role of sustainable development in European higher education

to improve education and research for sustainable development in partnership with society.

20 active member institutions plus app. 40 affiliated institutions through project cooperation (UE4SD).

Vision

Systemic transformation of HE for SD

To contribute to a sustainable transformation in society, higher education institutions need to transform themselves.

HE transformations need to take place in exchange and cooperation with policy and practice.

The COPERNICUS Alliance supports sustainability in higher education and research through:

• CRE COPERNICUS Charta, developed by the European Rectors‘ Conference in 1993

• By 2005 the Charta was signed by 326 universities, who voluntarily committed themselves to meet a 10-point action plan

• In 2009 the CA modified its structure towards an NGO with institutional memberships

• In 2012 the CA led the process for the Rio+20 Treaty on Higher Education to call for systemic and institutional transformation
