The Demographic Transition Model uses birth
and death rates to determine where countries fall along the Developing Developed spectrum
As countries develop economically they will progress further along to the next stage
As countries develop overtime, birth and death rates will go from high to low suggesting an increased internal development
What the “DTM” is?
Ahh the Stages!CBR, CDR, and NIR
3. Birth rates decline well after death rates. (Why?)
1. What causes birth rates to drop at this point?
2. Why is the population low at stage 1?
4. What do you think this area is showing?
Let’s break it down!
From 10,000 B.C.E. - 1750 C.E. every person,
empire, or country was here
Hunter Gatherer tribes were among this stage
High birth rates/death rates
Pop. growth very slow
Early Agrarian (Agriculture) societies were here
Threatened by high rates of contagious disease or famine
Many children needed for farming
Today, no country today is in this
Stage 1
5. Why does it fluctuate?
Stage 1 Pics
Great Britain was the 1st country to
enter stage 2 with the Industrial Revolution (Late 1750's-> Early 1800's)
Death rates declined (Basic hygiene and medicine introduced)
NIR (Natural Increase Rate) increases sharply
High Population growth from decrease in deaths
Improvements in food supply, agriculture, technology, and medical understanding drop rates
Stage 2
Basic Sanitation to the country
Stage 2 Pics
Known as the later Industrial stage
(Starts around 1900’s)
Birth rates decline sharply
Death rates decline slowly (More advanced tech and med.)
Pop. Growth occurs, but slowly
Urban migration increases
Female literacy and family planning increases
Improved contraceptives available
Stage 3
Afghanistan - female: 24.2%(2015)Mexico - female: 94.2% (2012)Portugal - female: 99.7% (2015)
Literacy Rates
"Post Industrial" (Modern Countries)
Birth/Death rates both low
Pop growth low or zero
Life expectancy high (Doctors highly available & tech. advanced)
More equal rights for women
Smaller family size
Developed Countries)
Stage 4
Stage 5??• Your country is so advanced that birth
rates decline to a point where it is lower than the death rate
• Population is declining overtime
• 6. Why is this bad for a country???• 7. Why is family size declining at this
stage???
