THE MONTHLY MAGAZINE OF HAWAII’S PUBLIC TELEVISION STATION | JULY 2012 | VOLUME 30, NUMBER 7
See page 4
That was a theme of the blessing offered in June by Kahu Kawika Kahiapo, a PBS Hawaii board member and Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winning musical artist, as PBS Hawaii prepared to broadcast live from the studio for the first time since an exploding light caused overhead sound insulation to erupt in flames.
Kawika’s fellow board members and PBS Hawaii staffers gathered in the beauti-fully restored studio. Also present were specialists who helped us re-build and Don Kozono of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, who graciously loaned us an alternate studio.
Insurance paid the $2 million cost of studio reconstruction and cleaning up smoke dam-age in other parts of the building.
A sign said: Welcome Back, Ku‘u Home, Our Beloved Studio.
Our home, indeed. The studio has been a haven for creating television productions and events that seek to do the right thing – shows with enlightened artistic and editorial
choices; programs that welcome people struggling to make their voices heard as well as those in positions of authority and power; and gatherings that connect and engage people in a purpose larger than themselves.
The PBS Hawaii vice president who oversees the studio, Robert Pennybacker of Creative Services, describes it as “a place of sacred trust,” using public airwaves to carry programs that demand the best from those who create them.

Over the years, some of the most gifted musicians in Hawaii and the world have performed here. Major election debates have been conducted here. And seminal productions have been staged here, from the Peabody Award-winning Damien about the Kalaupapa priest who became a saint, to Betrayal, the story of the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, to elements of the first-in-the-nation student journalism program, HIKI N -O. And – most importantly – the studio is where people and ideas come together, where disagreement need not be disagreeable and where the emphasis is on light, not heat.
We intend to keep a fine tradition going, with continu-ing viewer support. Now that our programming may be seen around the globe via the Internet, our mission has expanded. Not only do we bring the world to Hawaii, we bring Hawaii to the world.
Following Kahu Kawika Kahiapo’s blessing, there was an informal lunch in the studio, with attendees relieved to have the studio back and excited about the future.
Terrence Quinsaat, a studio crew chief, took a long look at folks enjoying each other’s company in the restored studio.
He turned to me and said, “I feel it. The ha is coming back. It feels good.”

his month, take a “staycation” with the PBS Arts Summer Festival! Seven pro-
grams will take viewers on an ex-ploration of nearly 20 cities around the globe, offering an in-depth look at music, theater, art, architecture and cultural history from some of the world’s most unique locations. From Islamic architecture in Spain to African drum rhythms in Cuba, PBS Hawaii is bringing the world to Hawaii through this Festival, which begins June 29 at 9:00 pm and continues every Friday through August 10.
Hosted by award-winning televi-sion, film and stage star Anna Dea-vere Smith, the Festival celebrates the contributions of independent filmmakers. They include a behind-
the-scenes profile of actor/play-wright John Leguizamo; a film that chronicles a year in the life of tal-ented teenage Mariachi musicians; a look at the Barnes collection of priceless museum pieces; and a concert documentary profiling world-renowned mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato. The Festival also explores international arts, with a historic concert by four Cuban mu-sic greats and a journey into Islamic art narrated by acclaimed actress Susan Sarandon. The Festival ends with a 75th anniversary concert from one of the oldest music festi-vals in the country – Tanglewood.
As the number-one source for arts programming on television, PBS Hawaii is proud to deliver a diverse and vibrant array of content that viewers can’t find anywhere else.
“The PBS Summer Arts Festival is part of our ongoing commitment to arts content on-air and online,” says PBS Hawaii President and CEO Leslie Wilcox. “We now know that the arts not only enrich the human spirit and create vibrant, healthy communities, they also help children develop critical thinking skills, succeed academically and contribute to a positive school environment. Everyone – regard-less of their circumstances – must have access to the arts to experi-ence and enjoy.”
Though most people agree that the arts are critical to a community, they are often the first “non-essen-tial” subject to leave the classroom, amid budget constraints in a tight economy.

“We have an endless supply of data that ties students’ involvement in the arts to higher test scores, high-er graduation rates, more commu-nity service, less boredom in school and so on,” says Marilyn Cristofori, CEO of the Hawaii Arts Alliance. “Yet it’s still an uphill battle to keep a robust arts curriculum in the classroom. We seem to maintain a 19th-century mindset that the arts are either frivolous or elitist.”
Not so at PBS Hawaii, where over the course of a year we offer more than 500 hours of arts and culture programming – from Na Mele to Great Performances.
“PBS Hawaii has always been a terrific resource for programming that engages,” adds Cristofori. “We know that you can’t get kids to fall in love with learning until they fall in love with life. And that’s what the arts, the creative process, brings to education – excitement and engagement.”
The importance of creativity to learning is not news to some of
Hawaii’s educators. “The arts can be used as vehicles to explore other subjects,” says Haunani Seward, principal at Ke Kula Niihau O Kekaha. In the fall, the Kauai public charter school will integrate geometry and visual art through an elective class that explores Vincent van Gogh’s painting, “Bedroom in Arles.” Students will analyze the van Gogh masterpiece and grasp geometrical concepts such as perspective, angles, lines and vanishing points. This unit has had past success at Eleele School, where Seward taught prior to becoming principal at Ke Kula Niihau O Kekaha.
“They begin to reflect upon the relevance of math to the visual arts, which in turn enhances their understanding for other subject areas,” Seward says.
Seward feels it would be wrong to deny children the chance to
use their innate creative intellect and talent.
“Depriving students of the arts would be akin to stripping them of their culture and their identity,” Seward says.
So this summer, sit back in your easy chair and let us bring world music, theater, dance and art to you. All the world is on stage!

rank Doyle and his wife Gertrude combined educa-tion with a dedication to
the belief that when opportunity knocks, it’s wise to open the door. The word “can’t” did not appear in their vocabulary. Thanks to this couple’s generosity, students and nonprofits have received needed support to fulfill their own dreams and missions, through The Frank M. and Gertrude R. Doyle Foun-dation, Inc.
In June, the Doyle Foundation awarded a $20,500 grant to the similarly-motivated HIKI N -O “Can Do” student news network.Though the Foundation is based in Reno, Nevada, one of the
trustees, Dan O’Hanlon, is from Maui. O’Hanlon offered to spon-sor a request to the Doyle Founda-tion from PBS Hawaii because he saw how well HIKI N -OŌaligned with the Foundation’s mission to “promote communities of produc-tivity and prosperity with access to education and advancement.”
“As a fan of PBS Hawaii, I was glad to facilitate support for HIKI N -O,” said O’Hanlon. “The Doyle Foun-dation wants to help people make their way in the world. HIKI N -O does that too by giving Hawaii’s students real-life skills and experi-ences that will serve them well in the future.”
Thanks to Dan O’Hanlon and all trustees of The Frank M. and Gertrude R. Doyle Foundation for supporting Hawaii’s students. We are proud to help fulfill Mr. and Mrs. Doyle’s dream of a better world for all.

Thanks to you, we met the match!
Earlier this year we received a challenge grant from the George Mason Fund of the Hawaii Com-munity Foundation for HIKI N -O. The Fund offered to match each donation to HIKI N -O dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000. We received a wonderful outpouring of com-munity support – often from the
HIKI N -O teachers. For example, a teacher at Waianae Intermediate School organized a school-wide fundraiser: “I’m super excited. With the help of my staff, Waianae Intermediate School is donating $300 to HIKI N -O. I know it’s not a whole lot...but I hope it helps towards the goal of $10,000.” Another teacher posted to our Facebook page: “I just donated to HIKI N -O, our fantastic student
news program on PBS Hawaii. If you give now, your donation will be matched. Our kids’ school has been featured several times. Help keep it going!”
Mahalo to our HIKI N -O teachers and other community supporters for helping us meet the George Mason Fund Challenge grant and secure an additional $10,000 for HIKI N -O!

extinct? When filmmaker Ian Cheney moves from rural Maine to New York City and dis-covers streets awash in light and skies devoid of stars, he embarks on a journey to America’s brightest and darkest corners, asking astrono-mers, cancer researchers and ecologists what is lost in the glare of city lights. At stake: a Carnegie Hall main stage debut, the use of a 1683 Stradivarius violin and other coveted priz-es. These young virtuosos, ranging in age from 17 to 29, experience triumphs and disappointments as they yearn to make the cut, while knowing only one can earn the title of Gold Medalist.
