Danica May, a seventh grader atDecatur Community Junior High, cor-rectly spelled “illustrate” and “orphan”to capture the Decatur County SpellingBee on Wednesday at Jennings. She isthe daughter of Dr. Richard and De-layne May.

Runner-up was Kelly Olson, anOberlin eighth grader, daughter of Jerryand Connie Olson of Oberlin. She wentdown on the word “illustrate.” JulieCarter of Jennings pronounced thewords to the six contestants.

Delbert and Roxie Erickson met theirsons, Kris Erickson of Wichita, and Dr.Kenyon and his wife, Stacia of Daven-port, Iowa, in Newton on Feb. 2. Theyall attended the Newton High Schoolbasketball game, during which DelbertErickson, a former wrestling coach atNewton High, was inducted into theNewton High School Hall of Fame dur-ing half-time. They also attended thereception and dance which honoredhim and other honorees at Santa FeSchool for family and friends. TheDelbert Ericksons spent the weekendwith Kris Erickson in Wichita and theyall enjoyed the Thunders hockey gameand the Lipizzan Horse Show at thecoliseum.

Wrestling coachinducted into hall

Delbert Erickson of Oberlin was oneof four inducted into the Newton HighSchool Athletic Hall of Fame on Feb.2, during halftime at the New-ton basketball game inRavenscroft Gymnasium.

Mr. Erickson, wrestlingcoach at the school for 11years, joined former basket-ball coach Walt Willis; KentFranz, who played on NewtonHigh’s state championshipbasketball team in 1979; and astandout basketball playerfrom the 1930s, Russell“Sticker” Brian. It was thesixth class inducted into the hall.

Mr. Erickson was wrestling coach atNewton from 1969 to 1980 and duringthat time, his teams won three stateteam titles, and he coached 17 statechampions and 61 state qualifiers.

He’s probably perhaps best remem-bered for his demeanor, said BrianHuxman, a reporter for the NewtonKansan. Mr. Erickson said he pridedhimself on a positive relationship withhis wrestlers.

“The wrestlers were dedicated,worked hard, gave everything theycould and were not afraid to go the ex-tra mile,” he said. “There was great re-spect and love between the athletes andmyself.

“We had outstanding support fromthe fans, school and community. Therewas a tremendous sense of pride in the

wrestling program and we could allshare in the success.

“Most of all, we had some great ath-letes at the time with anunselfish willingness togive for all.”

His teams placed secondat state once, won six re-gional titles and three ArkValley League champion-ships.

In making the hall pre-sentation, Roger Erickson(no relation), assistantprincipal at Newton HighSchool, said, “Delbert was

able to motivate and influence his wres-tlers to be top competitors. Many ath-letes he coached went on to successfulwrestling careers at the university level.He finished his coaching years at New-ton with a 55-16-1 record in dual meets.Delbert was named to the Kansas Wres-tling Coach of the Year in 1977.”

Mr. Erickson was accompanied toNewton by his wife, Roxie, and weremet by their sons, Kris Erickson ofWichita, and Kenyon and his wifeStacia of Davenport, Iowa. They allattended a reception and dance, whichhonored the four men, at Santa FeMiddle School.

Mr. Erickson is the son of the latePaul and Alma Erickson of ruralHerndon and is a graduate of AtwoodHigh School. He and his wife Roxie, aretired teacher, live in Oberlin.

Couple wed in Leovillein double-ring ceremony

Denise Carter of Jennings becamethe bride of Scott Taylor of Oberlin onFriday, Dec. 29, 2000, at ImmaculateConception Church in Leoville. TheRev. Jim Hoover officiated at thedouble-ring ceremony before a Christ-mas decorated altar.

Parents of the couple are Dave andDiane Carter, Jennings, and Charlieand Vickie Taylor, Oberlin.

Organist was Shelly McKenna, Jen-nings. Vocalists were Ruth and JerryCasper, Hays.

The bride was given in marriage byher father.

Jenny Casper, Jennings, sister of thebride, was matron of honor. Brides-maids were Mary Beth Stanley, Colby,and Heather West, Dresden, cousins ofthe bride; Jacinta Carter, Jennings, sis-ter of the bride, Tanci Mishler, Hays.

The bride is a 1995 graduate of Jen-nings High School and attended FortHays State University. She earned aBachelor’s Degree and is a substituteteacher.

Her fiance graduated from DecaturCommunity High School and earned adegree in Communications in 2000from Colby Community College. He isa disc jockey at KFNF Radio Station atOberlin.

They are making their home in Ober-lin.

Parent-teacher conferences setParent-Teacher Conferences for kin-

dergarten students of Oberlin Elemen-tary School will be held on Thursdayand Friday, and there will be no schoolfor students in Head Start, Develop-mental Kindergarten and kindergarten.

Conferences for grades 1-6 will beheld on Friday, with no school for thosegrades.

There will not be a regular confer-ence time scheduled with the fifth andsixth grade teachers, but parents mayvisit with them anytime from 8 a.m. tonoon and 1-3:30 p.m. in the gym. Mrs.Lohoefener and Mrs. Witt will not havescheduled times, but they will be avail-able in their room during the samehours on Friday.

Cosmopolitan elects new officersEula Juenemann was elected presi-

dent of the Cosmopolitan Club whenseven members met on Feb. 6 at thehome of Marty Munson.

Free throw contest held SundayThe Oberlin chapter hosted the dis-

trict Knights of Columbus Free Throwcontest Sunday afternoon in theDecatur Community HighSchool gym, coveringOberlin, Leoville, Selden,Herndon, and Atwood.

Each council held a con-test prior to district competi-tion, with groups divided intofive age groups for both girls andboys. District winners will go on tothe regional competition at 1 p.m. Sun-day at the Grinnell High School.
