THE 18TH AMENDMENT

It was approved by a 36th state on January 16th 1919 and it took effect 1 year later.

It was entirely repealed in December of 1933

Before the amendment was passed almost 65% of the country had already banned the sale of alcohol.

During the prohibition period religious and medical uses of alcohol were permitted.

It was still sold over the counter in pharmacies.

Alcohol consumption was still cut in half during prohibition and remained below pre-prohibition levels until the 1940s.

Law enforcement struggled to enforce the new law because many people were making their own alcohol or importing it.

The prohibition era is still criticized for the unintentional boost in urban organized crime today.

Bootlegging is the illegal production and sale of liquor.
