Care pathways

Care pathways are a methodology for the decision making and organization of care for a well-

defined group of patients during a well-defined period.

The aim of a care pathway is to enhance the quality of care by improving patient outcomes, promoting patient safety, increasing

patient satisfaction, and optimizing the use of resources

Defining characteristics of care pathways includes:An explicit statement of the goals and key elements of care based on evidence, best practice, and patient expectations; The facilitation of the communication, coordination of roles, and sequencing the activities of the multidisciplinary care team, patients and their relatives; The documentation, monitoring, and evaluation of variances and outcomes; and the identification of the appropriate resources.

patient satisfaction, and optimizing the use of resources

Questions?

How do we achieve this over time? How do we ensure continuity? Is clinical the only ‘Care pathway’?

Most Care Pathways designed by clinicians

Is not ‘Quality of Care’

dependent upon many non-clinical factors?

White Paper -

Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS

Cutting bureaucracy and administrative costs 5.3

So our first task is to increase the proportion of resource available for front-line services, by cutting the costs of health bureaucracy. Over the past decade, layers of national and regional organisations have accumulated, resulting in excessive bureaucracy, inefficiency and duplication. The Government will therefore impose the largest reduction in administrative costs in NHS history. Over the next four years we will reduce the NHS’s management costs by more than 45%.

BUT WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Driving Cost Improvement

The NHS Budget is going to be increased by around 0.7% paNHS Inflation is around 8% (using a median of available indicators)This shows a growing deficit of around 7% paGrowth in “front line”

of 10%

Means 10% more use of facilities
