The Whyte Avenue Art Walk is anoutdoor studio and gallery featuringhundreds of working artists. For threedays every summer, artists and theirart fill the sidewalks of the historicallyand culturally rich Old Strathconaarea. The Art Walk is a greatopportunity for artists and art loversto converge in a friendly, relaxedsetting. The purpose is to provideaffordable opportunity for fine artists,to ensure the appreciation andunderstanding of visual arts as wellas encourage purchasing original artmade by local artists.

Edmonton's Whyte Avenue Art Walkgrew from a desire to bring art andart-making to the public. It startedwith 35 artists in 1995. Now, over 320diverse artists mingle with more than30,000 visitors. The festival is a labour

of love for The Paint Spot as they haveadministered and supported the eventsince the beginning, 15 years ago. TheWhyte Avenue Art Walk works in closepartnership with the Old StrathconaFoundation and Old StrathconaBusiness Association and would notbe possible without their support.

An original experience, the WhyteAvenue Art Walk is a time to celebrateall aspects of visual arts. There arethousands of art works on display.Artists are encouraged to bring theirsupplies and their ideas to make artright on site. This provides an excitingopportunity for visitors to becomeengaged in a variety of creativeprocesses.

By bringing the studio to the Avenue,pedestrians are exposed to a rare

feast of diverse artistic ventures. Ifthey are curious about what they see,they can strike up a conversationwith the artists themselves. If theylove what they see, the Art Walkprovides a more personal way ofbuying art, directly from the artist!Many people buy their first pieceof original art at the Art Walk, andreturn each year to build theircollection. Nurturing art patrons isa vitally important aspect of theArt Walk. Once individuals acquireoriginal art they often continue tocollect art throughout their lives.

For artists of all levels, the WhyteAvenue Art Walk offers a welcomingenvironment. For emerging artists,the Art Walk is a great learningexperience. It is a time to gainvaluable feedback, build contact

lists, and raise profiles. The Art Walkshowcases many professional artistsand offers everyone the chance tomeet and exchange ideas with oneanother.
