What is the Trans-Tasman(3MT™)?

• A skills development activity which challenges

Research Higher Degree students to explain

their research project to a non-specialist

audience in just three minutes.

Why do it?

• Great skill to have• Develop confidence and competence• A winner for your CV• Fun to prepare with colleagues• You can win travel grants• La Trobe winner gets trip The University of

Western Sydney for the final in October.

Who can take part?

• Any one who is active in a Doctoral program with at least 66% research

• Anyone with a thesis under submission on the date of their first presentation in their local competition

• Graduates are not eligible.

Rules• Single static PowerPoint slide is permitted• No additional props• 3 minutes maximum• Competitors exceeding 3 minutes are

disqualified• Decision of the adjudicating panel is final.

Judging Criteria• Communication Style – was thesis topic and its

significance communicated in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience?

• Comprehension – did the presentation help you understand the research?

• Engagement – did the oration make you want to know more?
