once upon a time, there lived a poor miller who hadthree sons. When he died, all he owned wasdistributed among his sons. The eldest had the mill,the second had th-e Oonkey and the youngest son hadthe miller's cat. The boy was very fond oJtfre cat buthe could not see how the cat could ever make himrich. As he softly touched the cat, she said, "Don'tworry,master. If you do what I tell you, you will seehow much I can do for you! First get me a large bagand a pair of boots".

The youngest son of the miller took some of themoney he had and bought a large bag and a fine pairof yellow coloured boots. The cat put on her new pairof boots and at once went out into the garden. Thiswas Puss-in-Boots.

She picked up some carrots from the garden and putthem in the bag. Then she went off across the fieldsuntil she found a rabbit hole. She put the bag downwith its mouth wide open so that the carrot could beseen. Then she hid herself behind a low hedge. Soona fat grey rabbit came out of the hole. He smelt thefresh canrots and jumped into the bag to eat them.Puss-in- Boots immediately jumped from behind thehedge and quickly tied a string around the bag.Thefat rabbit was caught.
