Let’s review the verbs and their meanings.

• acheter is a stem changing verb• A stem changing verb means that the stem

changes but we still use the same endings.

• (THE STEM IS WHAT WE HAVE LEFT AFTER WE TAKE OFF THE “ER” “IR” OR “RE” ENDINGS.)

• So what do you see what has changed? • Can you make a rule about it?

• The rule is to add an è in everything but the nous and vous forms.

• Other verbs conjugated like ‘acheter’:

Notice that in préférer and espérer the accent mark changes direction in the stem!

• mettre is another irregular verb and can be used to talk about placing something somewhere, what you are wearing or even to turn something on!

• Je mets une robe. Il met le livre sur la table. Elle met la télévision.

• ouvrir means to open and souffrir means to suffer and are two more irregular verbs that are conjugated very similarly!

• We have already learned the basic negative construction in French- adding ‘ne (n’)…pas’ to a sentence will make that sentence negative.

• Ex: Je ne chante pas • I don’t sing, I’m not singing.

• But have you ever wanted to say ‘no one, nothing, never…’?

• In French we have specific negative expressions to say just that!

ne…jamais-neverne…rien-nothing

ne…personne-no onene…plus-anymore

ne…que-onlyne…ni…ni-neither/nor

• How do you form it? It’s easy, just form it like ne pas, but replace pas with jamais or rien etc.

• Je ne suis pas triste. I am not sad• Je ne suis jamais triste. I am never sad.

• How do you form it? It’s easy, just form it like ne pas, but replace pas with jamais or rien etc.

• Je n’ai pas de livre. I don’t have any books• Je n’ai rien. I don’t have anything.

• How do you form it? It’s easy, just form it like ne pas, but replace pas with jamais or rien etc.

• Je ne parle pas. I don’t speak. • Je ne parle à personne. I don’t speak to

anyone.

• How do you form it? It’s easy, just form it like ne pas, but replace pas with jamais or rien etc.

• Je ne travaille pas. I am not working.Je ne travaille plus. I am no longer working.

• How do you form it? It’s easy, just form it like ne pas, but replace pas with jamais or rien etc.

Il ne voit pas les lions. He doesn’t see the lions.

Il ne voit que les lions. He only sees the lions.

• How do you form it? It’s easy, just form it like ne pas, but replace pas with jamais or rien etc.

• Il ne voit pas les lions.• Il ne voit ni les lions, ni les tigres. • He sees neither the lions nor the tigres.
