Group 1: Racial Issues

• 15-min. Fishbowl

• Discuss the Tom Robinson case & Atticus, Scout and her problems with other kids /family members relating to it, racial tensions and issues in Maycomb

• Discuss Calpurnia & the kids and what they learn of racial issues

Group 2: Symbolism

• 15-min. Fishbowl• Discuss guns, the rule of “not killing mockingbirds,”

and the “Mad Dog” affair – PS: NOTE THE NAME OF THE DOG and figure out what the dog event may actually represent

• If mockingbirds are to become the symbol of “innocent things/people” in this novel, who might qualify right now as a symbolic “mockingbird” and why?

• Discuss various characters who demonstrate courage- start small and build up to greater and greater courageous stances by characters
