Discove r the Newes t Books @ WML
Keep up to date on the newest books to hit the shelves at Walker Memorial Library with our online tools. Every librarian loves seeing the new books as they arrive and head to the New Book Shelf. Now you can do the
What is a hero?
Is it someone with x-ray vision? Someone who can fly? Someone who protects others?
Kids and teens can explore that question in the library this summer, and meet some of Westbrook’s local heroes. Every Hero Has a Story is the theme of the 2015 Summer Reading Program, which runs from June 20th through July 31st. We will kick off our program on Saturday June 20th with two Superhero Training Camps, one for kids and one for teens. Check your Westbrook School
Department Thursday folders for a schedule of events.
Did you know that summer reading programs have been around for over 100 years? Summer reading programs began in the 1890s as a way to encourage school children, particularly those in urban areas and not needed for farm work, to read during their summer vacation, use the library and develop the habit of reading. The Walker Memorial Library was built during that time period, in 1894.
Modern summer reading programs are very
important for students! Numerous studies have shown that reading over the summer prevents summer reading loss, or “summer slide.” Summer
slide happens when students don’t keep up on the skills they learned the previous school year. They will return to school in the fall behind their peers who kept their brain and learned skills sharp over the summer. Summer reading loss is cumulative. Children don’t “catch up” in fall because the other
children are moving ahead with their skills. By the end of 6th grade, children who lose reading skills over the summer are two years behind their classmates.
Help us fight off summer slide. Encourage your child or grandchild to participate in the summer reading program. They will have lots of fun in the great programs we have scheduled and will get great prizes for reading. All while keeping their brains extra sharp! Rebecca Albert Library Director

Mr. Penumbra’s 24
–Hour Bookstore
by Robin Sloan
The Great Recession has shuffled
Clay Jannon out of his life as a San
Francisco web-design drone and
landed him a new gig working the
night shift at Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour
Bookstore. But after just a few days
on the job, Clay begins to realize that
this store is even more curious than
the name suggests. There are only a
few customers, but they come in
repeatedly and never seem to actually
buy anything. Soon he embarks on a
complex analysis of the customers'
behavior and ropes his friends into
helping him figure out just what's
going on.
