A THOUGHT FOR SUNDAY
GENEROSITY
How did Jesus respond in a time of scarcity?
Something happens inside of human beings in times of crisis. Our instincts for self-preservation kick in, and we begin to cultivate a scarcity mind-set. It becomes very easy to focus on the well-being of ourselves and our family and forget the difficulties of others around us. We are especially prone to this behaviour in times of uncertainty.
Jesus of Nazareth was no stranger to this kind of social instability. He grew up in land occupied by a foreign military, and oppressive Roman taxes made life difficult for his family and neighbours. Yet he called his followers to a very different kind of response. He taught that our obsession with self-preservation not only makes us more miserable and anxious, it actually creates more of the thing that we’re trying to avoid.
Listen Join Tim in a short meditation on the theme of generosity. You can listen to this on your own or in a group. If you are leading a small group or family, feel free to listen to the message and contextualize it for your needs.

SUNDAY HYMN
PRAISE TO THE LORD, THE ALMIGHTY
573
1 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation! Come, all who hear; now to his temple draw near, join me in glad adoration.
2 Praise to the Lord, above all things so wondrously reigning; sheltering you under his wings, and so gently sustaining! Have you not seen all that is needful has been sent by his gracious ordaining?
3 Praise to the Lord, who will prosper your work and defend you; surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend you. Ponder anew what the Almighty can do, if with his love he befriends you.
4 Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him. Let the Amen sound from his people again; gladly forever adore him.

Alpha Online is starting this Wednesday!
We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to ask the big questions of life.
What is my purpose? What happens when I die? Why is there suffering?
Alpha is a chance to ask these big questions and explore the Christian faith in a fun, non-pressurised environment. Each session includes a short film and a discussion where you can share what you think with a small group of people just like you.
Every Wednesday a new Alpha launches and you can chose a time that fits best with your schedule. Morning starts at 10:00 BST and evening Alpha starts at 19:30 BST. What happens when I sign up? Once you have signed up we will allocate you to the next available course and will you give the start date and time as soon as you register. Over 1,400 people have registered so it may be a week or two before you begin. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us at htbalpha@htb.org. We look forward to welcoming you onto Alpha very soon.
NEXT ALPHA STARTS: AT VARIOUS TIMES
THE MARRIAGE COURSE
THE MARRIAGE COURSE ONLINE
The Marriage Course is a series of seven sessions, designed to help couples invest in their relationship and build a strong marriage.
How does it work? The course runs exactly as it would be if you were attending in person, except that you will be able to do so from the comfort of your own home - where you can replicate your own date night: Each session lasts for 1 hour 55 minutes, half of which will be for your
conversations. The films will be available online and you will be given access when you
register for the course. Don’t forget the candles, snacks, drinks, older kids in another room and the
younger ones in bed. Try to make it feel as special as possible.
When does it start? You can begin the course whenever you like, and it will run for 7 consecutive weeks.
What happens when we sign up? Once you register, we will send you the link for you to connect to the online course. We will be running the course free of charge. The only cost you will incur is purchasing two course journals - you will need one each - and these can be bought from The Alpha Shop or CLC. Please allow up to 10 days for delivery.

MAIDSTONE & PEMBURY HOSPITAL
NEW VISITING HOURS As of Monday 6 July 2020, our visitor policy is changing and patients are
permitted one visitor at a specified hour each day.
Detailed guidance is listed below:
Each patient is allowed one visitor (close family or loved one only). Two visitors
from the same household or bubble may be allowed in exceptional
circumstances, such as for patients receiving end of life care or where the visitor
themselves needs assistance – this must be arranged with the nurse in charge of
the ward in advance by telephone.
Each ward is assigned an hour per day for visiting to manage visitor numbers
within the hospital sites. Please refer to details below for specific ward visiting
times:
Maidstone Hospital Ward visiting times
Acute Stroke Unit/Cornwallis Ward: 2pm – 3pm daily
John Day Ward/Chronic Pain Unit/Intensive Care Unit: 3pm – 4pm daily
Chaucer Ward/Coronary Care Unit/Culpepper Ward/Whatman Ward: 4pm – 5pm
daily
Pye Oliver Ward/Mercer Ward: 5pm – 6pm daily
Tunbridge Wells Hospital Ward visiting times
Ward 10/20/30: 2pm – 3pm daily
Intensive Care Unit/Ward 11/Ward 31: 3pm – 4pm daily

Ward 32 - For elective patients on Ward 32 (Tunbridge Wells Hospital) only one
visitor from the patient’s household is allowed.
Chronic Pain Unit – For patients on the Chronic Pain Unit (Maidstone Hospital)
only one visitor from the patient’s household is allowed.
Covid wards - No visiting is permitted on Covid wards except in compassionate
ATTENTION
circumstances (such as patients receiving end of life care). This includes the Acute
Medical Unit and Acute Assessment Unit at both hospital sites.
Lord North Ward - Due to the vulnerability of the patients, no visiting is permitted
on Lord North Ward at Maidstone Hospital, except in compassionate
circumstances.
Maternity Departments - Partners of people/parents in labour are to be able to
stay throughout labour including in the early stages of labour and during
induction of labour on the antenatal ward. The same partner can remain until
discharge from post-natal ward. For people/parents in the antenatal ward, but
not in labour, only the nominated birth partner may visit. NO visitor/partner to
attend scan or any antenatal appointment. NO children permitted in any
Maternity Departments.
Neonatal Unit – one parent only at any time. NO siblings.
Paediatric Wards – one parent/carer to be with the child as agreed with ward
staff.
Outpatients – due to social distancing in the waiting areas of Outpatients it is not
possible to allow outpatients to have an accompanying person. Only those
requiring assistance, and children, may bring an accompanying person.
All visitors must enter by the main entrance at Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge
Wells Hospital and have their temperature checked. Face coverings/masks must
be worn - masks will be supplied if the visitor arrives without a face covering.
Hand hygiene - All visitors will be instructed on hand hygiene by ward staff, which
should be performed at the beginning and end of each visit. Gloves are not
needed for visitors. Visitors who arrive on the ward wearing gloves must remove
them to avoid contamination risk. No children under 16 are permitted to visit
except in compassionate circumstances. This must be arranged in advance with
ward staff by telephone. Visitors may only visit one patient.
In bays, curtains are to be drawn during visits to provide a physical barrier
between beds and visitors. To help keep everyone safe, we ask you to consider
other ways of keeping in touch with patients such as phone calls or video
messaging.

CHARITY NEWS
THE CHARITY FOR JULY, AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER IS SOBELL LODGE
with which I am sure you are well acquainted. It gives me great pleasure to promote Sobell Lodge as the Charity for July August and September as 63 years ago my brother, paralysed from the neck down, became a resident at the London Cheshire Home at Dulwich. I, therefore, urge you to give as generously as you possibly can to support this truly local charity.
In due course, I will let you know who the speaker will be on July 12th. Regards, Maureen
HARD PLASTIC LIDS
Thank you to everyone who has continued to save clean hard plastic lids.....and all
who will start now. Please either keep them until restrictions at church are lifted
or drop them off to 41, Hanmer Way. You do not need to wait until you have a
bag full. The lids go to Lush in Maidstone who have them recycled into children’s
playgrounds, or into containers for their products.

PRAYER
Dear Friends,
A warm welcome to another email pointing you in the direction of some useful
prayer resources. As lockdown eases, may we hold on to all that has been good in
these past few months, let go of all that has weighed us down, and find renewed
strength and hope for the months ahead.
I hope some of the below will be helpful in that process of reflection and renewal.
1. LISTENING ON THE WAY There’s still a little more time to tell us what you have been hearing God say over the past few months. Just visit this link and fill out the boxes. There are no right or wrong answers; we’d just like to gather thoughts and insights from this unusual season we’re living through. https://www.canterburydiocese.org/our-life/prayer/day-of-prayer-
pilgrimage/listening-on-the-way-what-did-you-hear/
2. COVID-19 PRAYER BRIEFING Here’s the link to our latest Prayer briefing, focusing on some of the issues which are particularly relevant as lockdown eases:

I also attach a comprehensive (and concise) list of prayer pointers, all focusing on
issues around the lifting of lockdown. Donald Baldwin has produced it for us and I
think you’ll find it useful for anyone leading intercessions in Sunday worship or
morning/evening prayer.
3. THE JOYS AND PERILS OF PRAYING TOGETHER ONLINE My Weekly Reflection podcast on Saturday was all about what I’ve learnt about prayer from the vast multitude of online prayer meetings I’ve attended in lockdown … have a listen here: https://soundcloud.com/canterburydiocese/weekly-reflection-280620
