Literature Review

Mobile Technology & Vocabulary Instruction

• Limited Studies (e.g., used as electronic flashcards or communication tool)

• Findings difficult to generalize to other instructional methods (e.g., small sample sizes, difficulties conceptualizing learning, specific focus of studies)

Learning Theories

Dual Coding Theory (Allan Paivio): Recall of newly learned material is enhanced when it is tied to verbal associations and visual imagery (verbal and non-verbal channels)

Social Constructivist Theory: Focuses on an individual's learning as a result of their interactions within a group

Schema Theory: Promotes idea of linking newly acquired information with prior knowledge to promote better long-term recall.
