Literacy Task 2
We have been learning how to describe a character by describing the things they do and what they are interested in. We are now going to imagine that the children were not at the beach when Mr Poe came to get them. Imagine that the children were in a coffee shop when Mr Poe arrived. The short paragraphs below may have been written to describe such a setting
Inside the twee and dingy coffee shop, Klaus positioned himself directly beneath the shop’s squawking parrot. He placed his faded flat cap on the table and shoved his gloves inside the only unoccupied pocket in his coat (the other three each containing a book). The bird was cruelly locked in a sturdy cage far more suited to a creature a tenth of its size.
KlausThis tells us that Klaus was “nerdy” or very interested in books
This tells us that Klaus was very interested in nature
Violet
Violet noticed that Klaus had begun to fashion a pick from the remains of an ornament lying in the utensil pot. His lithe hands were working furiously beneath his hat. She subtly passed him a paperclip under the table which she had just removed from the menu Sunny was happily destroying. Violet returned her gaze to the waitress who was still struggling with the coffee machine. She watched her with a mixture of frustration and admiration. The machine was clearly not up to the task and Violet, deftly tying her unruly hair back, let her mind wander to all kinds of improvements and adaptations she could engineer.
Highlight the phrases or sentence that tells us that Violet looked after her siblings and liked to invent things and was interested in science.
Literacy Task 3 - Writing
Look at the settings below. Choose one setting. Imagine that Violet, Klaus and Sunny were here when Mr Poe arrived. Write a short narrative detailing what Violet and Klaus were doing before Mr Poe arrived. You must show what Klaus and Violet are like by writing about their actions – what they are doing - not simply telling me what they are like.
You can choose a coffee shop or down by the river, in the museum or walking in the woods.
STEMElectricity Task
How is electricity created?
Why is metal used in plugs?
What is an insulator?
What is a conductor?
What is power?
