Opening HymnWe sing our opening hymn:

Come Down O Love Divine

LH119 CAL 293Words: Bianco of Siena (?-1434)

Music: Ralph Vaughn Williams, 1906

Come Down O Love Divine1. Come down, O love divine, and seek this soul of mine,And visit it with Your own ardor

glowing.O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear,And kindle it, Your holy flame

bestowing.

Come Down O Love Divine2. O let it freely burn, til earthly passions turnTo dust and ashes in its heat

consuming;’And let Your glorious light shine ever on my sight,And clothe me round, the while my

path illuming.

Come Down O Love Divine3. Let holy charity, my outward vesture be,’And lowliness become my inner

clothing;True lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part,And o’er its own shortcomings

weeps with loathing.

Come Down O Love Divine4. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long,Shall far outpass the power of

human telling; For none can guess its grace, till he becomes the placeWherein the Holy Spirit makes His

dwelling. †

C: We confess to you, almighty God, before the whole company of heaven, and to each other, that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed by our own fault. »»

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father almighty, from thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.

29

FIRST READINGActs 2:1-21

The coming of the Holy Spirit

R: The first reading for Pentecost is written in Chapter two of Acts beginning at verse one.

30

Acts 2:1-21 On the day of Pentecost all the

LORD'S followers were together in one place.  2Suddenly there was a noise from heaven like the sound of a mighty wind! It filled the house where they were meeting.   3Then they saw what looked like fiery tongues moving in all directions, and a tongue came and settled on each person there.

31

Acts 2:1-21 4The Holy Spirit took control of

everyone, and they began speaking whatever languages the Spirit let them speak. 5Many religious Jews from every country in the world were living in Jerusalem.   6And when they heard this noise, a crowd gathered.

32

Acts 2:1-21 But they were surprised, because they

were hearing everything in their own languages.   7They were excited and amazed, and said:

Don't all these who are speaking come from Galilee?   8Then why do we hear them speaking our very own languages?

33

Acts 2:1-21 9Some of us are from Parthia, Media,

and Elam. Others are from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia,10Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, parts of Libya near Cyrene, Rome, 11Crete, and Arabia.

34

Acts 2:1-21 Some of us were born Jews, and

others of us have chosen to be Jews. Yet we all hear them using our own languages to tell the wonderful things God has done.

12Everyone was excited and confused. Some of them even kept asking each other, "What does all this mean?”

35

Acts 2:1-21 13Others made fun of the LORD'S

followers and said, "They are drunk."

14Peter stood with the eleven apostles and spoke in a loud and clear voice to the crowd:

Friends and everyone else living in Jerusalem, listen carefully to what I have to say!

36

Acts 2:1-21 15You are wrong to think that these

people are drunk. After all, it is only nine o'clock in the morning.

16But this is what God had the prophet Joel say, 17"When the last days come, I will give my Spirit to everyone. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will have dreams.

37

Acts 2:1-21 18In those days I will give my Spirit to

my servants, to my servants, both men and women, and they will prophesy. 19I will work miracles in the sky above and wonders on the earth below. There will be blood and fire and clouds of smoke. 20The sun will turn dark, and the moon will be as red as blood before the great and wonderful day of the Lord appears.

38

Acts 2:1-21 21Then the Lord will save everyone

who asks for his help."This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

39

Psalm 104:24-34, 35b CEV

R: The Psalm is Psalm 104. R: 24Our LORD, by your wisdom you

made so many things; the whole earth is covered with your living creatures.

C: 25But what about the ocean so big and wide? It is alive with creatures, large and small.

40

Psalm 104:24-34, 35b CEV

R: 26And there are the ships, as well as Leviathan, the monster you created to splash in the sea.

C: 27All of these depend on you to provide them with food,

R: 28and you feed each one with your own hand, until they are full.

41

Psalm 104:24-34, 35b CEV

C: 29But when you turn away, they are terrified; when you end their life, they die and rot.

R: 30You created all of them by your Spirit, and you give new life to the earth.

C: 31Our LORD, we pray that your glory will last forever and that you will be pleased with what you have done.

42

Psalm 104:24-34, 35b CEV

R: 32You look at the earth, and it trembles. You touch the mountains, and smoke goes up.

C: 33As long as I live, I will sing and praise you, the LORD God.

43

Psalm 104:24-34, 35b CEV

R: 34I hope my thoughts will please you, because you are the one who makes me glad.

C: With all my heart I praise you, LORD! I praise you!

44

Second readingRomans 8:14-17 CEV

The Spirit makes us God's children

R: The second reading for today is written in Chapter eight of Romans beginning at verse fourteen.

45

Romans 8:14-1714Only those people who are led by

God's Spirit are his children.15God's Spirit doesn't make us slaves

who are afraid of him. Instead, we become his children and call him our Father. 16God's Spirit makes us sure that we are his children.

46

Romans 8:14-1717His Spirit lets us know that together

with Christ we will be given what God has promised. We will also share in the glory of Christ, because we have suffered with him.

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL John 14:8-17,25-27 CEV

Jesus promises the Holy Spirit

L: The Holy Gospel is written in Chapter 14 of the Gospel according to John beginning at verse 8.

C: Glory to You O Lord.

47

John 14:8-17,25-27   8Philip said, "Lord, show us the

Father. That is all we need." 9Jesus replied: Philip, I have been

with you for a long time. Don't you know who I am? If you have seen me, you have seen the Father. How can you ask me to show you the Father?

48

John 14:8-17,25-27  10Don't you believe that I am one with

the Father and that the Father is one with me? What I say isn't said on my own. The Father who lives in me does these things. 11Have faith in me when I say that the Father is one with me and that I am one with the Father. Or else have faith in me simply because of the things I do.

49

John 14:8-17,25-27  12I tell you for certain that if you have

faith in me, you will do the same things that I am doing. You will do even greater things, now that I am going back to the Father. 13Ask me, and I will do whatever you ask. This way the Son will bring honour to the Father. 14I will do whatever you ask me to do.

50

John 14:8-17,25-27  15Jesus said to his disciples: If you

love me, you will do as I command.   16Then I will ask the Father to send you the Holy Spirit who will help you and always be with you.  17The Spirit will show you what is true.

51

John 14:8-17,25-27   The people of this world cannot

accept the Spirit, because they don't see or know him. But you know the Spirit, who is with you and will keep on living in you.

52

John 14:8-17,25-27  25I have told you these things while I

am still with you.   26But the Holy Spirit will come and help you, because the Father will send the Spirit to take my place. The Spirit will teach you everything and will remind you of what I said while I was with you.

53

John 14:8-17,25-27  27I give you peace, the kind of peace

that only I can give. It isn't like the peace that this world can give. So don't be worried or afraid.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.C: Praise to You O Christ.

54

L: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for sending us the Spirit. Fill us with the Holy Spirit, so that we can know you and the Father.

C: Amen.

Sermon

62

HymnWe sing :

O Father my Father

LH 850 CAL293Robin Mann 1949- (1973)

63

O Father my Father1. O Father, my Father, I call on your

name;my heart it is heavy with sorrow and

shame.For I’ve been a coward, my courage

has flown, and love lies within me as cold as a

stone.

64

O Father my Father2. No word can excuse me, no word

that I say;no place that I run to can hide me

away. For nothing is hidden; yes, all is

revealed -you see how I’m sick, Lord; I want

to be healed.

65

O Father my Father3. O Father, my Father, I call on

your name;your promise is with me to carry my

blame. You came as a servant, your road it

was clear;no coward was Jesus, for love

knows no fear.

66

O Father my Father4. O how I do wish that my last day

was here, that I might be with you where all is

made clear;where sorrow is over, the world is

set free, and that which we hope for we

finally see. †
