What would you do if you had to swapthe cosy familiarity of your home for aforeign country? A place you know littleabout and whose language you don’tspeak?

It’s a classic “sink or swim” scenario,one which catapults people out of theircomfort zones and forces them toreevaluate everything they know andtake for granted.

This process can be hugely rewardingbut without the right support it can alsobe lonely, confusing, scary andfrustrating.

For the past 47 years, the DundeeInternational Women’s Centre has beenworking to help newcomers to the cityand country by providing Englishclasses, social and recreational activities,job training and advice to women frommore than 80 countries.

Marta Wlodarczyk grew up inWarsaw, Poland.

She says: “I moved to Dundee in 2005.My husband got a job here so we madethe hard decision to migrate.

“To overcome the language barrier, Istarted learning English in the centre.

“I have been here for 10 years and Ilike it. People are very open andwelcoming. But I do miss my family.”

Marta always knew she wanted towork with children.

“Thanks to the centre I now have a jobhere with the mobile creche,”she says.

Fatima Ramzan was born in Pakistanbut her parents moved to Bradford in1968 when she was six months old.

“Following partition my familylost everything and the East IndiaTrading company were seeking migrantworkers for reconstructing Britain afterthe Second World War,” Fatimaexplains.

Although she experienced somebullying at school, she didn’t let anyonecome between her and her dreams.

“In 2004 I enrolled for a degree inpsychology at Abertay University andwas also involved in community workprojects,”she says.

Her passion for education for womenled her to complete her postgraduatestudy in community learning anddevelopment and she is now working atthe centre.
