Types of Historical Writing

Types of Historical Writing- Objective◦ just the facts, written in an unbiased way without taking a viewpoint

- Subjective◦ contains the writer’s opinion (bias), takes a viewpoint/passes judgment

- Tip for writing: Always try to be as objective as possible

- Beware of subjective writing

◦ Compare with another source

Examples of Bias:

“The invasion resulted in several thousand civilian casualties.”

Vs.

“The barbarians committed a brutal and senseless genocide that will stain their descendants for all ages to come.”

Group Work: A Study of Bias in HistoryDivide into groups of 2

- Read the first passage from A Patriot’s History and discuss with your partner. Then fill out the first part of the bias worksheet.

- Read the second passage by Zinn and discuss. Then fill out the remainder of the bias worksheet.

- Compare the 2 passages.
