Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated.

European nations pursued dreams of empire, built up their armies and forced alliances.

WW1 known as the “Great War” began in July 1914.

Allied Powers – Great Britain, France & Russia

Central Powers – Germany, Austria-Hungary & Ottoman Empire

Trench wars took place for three years.

Germans used poisonous gases against their enemies.

America tried to remain neutral.

Propaganda was used to persuade America to join in the war.

Germans used Submarine Warfare.

The Zimmerman Telegram asking Mexico to reclaim Texas, New Mexico & Arizona was found.

German U-Boats sank three American ships.

On April 6, 1917 President Woodrow Wilson signed the declaration of war.

America joined forces to destroy German Submarines.

America sent a convoy of supplies to soldiers.

America first went into battle in June 1918.

On October 4, 1918 Germany asked America for an armistice to end the fighting.

Armistice Day is celebrated on November 11th.
