SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

Waste Management

Introduction

AB Glass is a leader in the field of aluminium and glass facades. Since our humble beginnings in 1991 we have grown into a nationwide glazing company offering our services to all sectors of the market.

Our work can be seen on many landmark buildings throughout Britain including the DVLA in Swansea and Colston Hall in Bristol.

Although the majority of our works consist of large construction projects, we still hold true to good value and service for the domestic market.

SUSTAINABILITY IN THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY

BENEFITS OF EMS (ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS)

more effectively and reduce costs

Why AB Glass Choose EMS

• We were already carrying a number of Environmental Best Practice Techniques.

• As the company grew, we knew that we had to demonstrate our commitment to creating a cleaner environment, our Corporate Social Responsibility.

• Reduction in costs to make ourselves more competitive in our market sector.

• To enable us to secure future projects to safe guard the company’s future.

• Current Government plans to increase Landfill Tax to £72 per tonne by 2013

AB Glass Waste Management – The Key Factors

• Securing senior management support – allocation of time and resource.

• Employee awareness and training - secure staff buy-in to new ideas.

• Securing the services of a waste management company – ensure we comply with strict rules and regulations.

• Introduction of recycling points within manufacturing area and canteen – making it easy for the segregation and disposal of waste at source.

• Removal of all General Waste bins from offices – replacing with recycling points only.

• Recycling facilities installed on larger project sites – enabling AB Glass to recycle larger quantities of waste.

In terms of quantities of material used, in 2009 we recycled:

• Aluminium – Approx. 12.2 Tonnes

• Glass waste - Approx. 8.5 Tonnes

• Wood – Approx. 3.22 Tonnes

• Plastic waste – Approx. 2.61 Tonnes

• Paper – 1.95 Tonnes

And with our commitment to continuous improvement we look to improve on these figures in 2010.

Waste Management – What we recycle

• During 2007, we achieved our first reduction in waste to landfill by 15%.

• By the end of 2009-10 period, overall, we have reduced our annual waste to landfill by 83%, demonstrating a solid year on year improvement.
