PURPOSEFUL TALK is one of the major means through which children construct and refine their understanding of language. Talk should underpin all (language) activities.

-Education Department of Western Australia (1996)

PURPOSEFUL TALK is also one of the main ways in which children develop their understanding of new concepts. As such, it becomes the KINGPIN around which instructional tasks revolve. It is INTEGRAL TO ALL COMPONENTS OF A LESSON- from teacher modeling and guiding to BOTH COLLABORATIVE AND INDEPENDENT TASKS.

•  plan meaningful student interactions that occur within an authentic context

•  explicitly teach the language that students need to be able to engage in academic

discourse about content, and

•  always, always link their talk to reading and writing
