Adverb Review

What is an Adverb?It is a word that describes or adds to the meaning of a verb, an adjective or an another adverb

Adverb Review Adverbs usually end in “ly”

(with a few exceptions):

Adj - careful / Adv - carefully

Adj - quick / Adv - quickly very, quite, often

Adverb Review

Adverbs appear at the beginning, middle, or end of sentences depending on the type of adverb used and the meaning intended.

There are adverbs of time (when), manner (how), frequency (how often), and place (where).

Order of Adverbs: Initial Position:

Time: Yesterday, there were more fires in southern California.

Opinion: Honestly, the price is too high.

Manner: Quickly, we got into the car before the rain started.

Order of Adverbs Middle Position:

Frequency: The academic year always starts in September.

Manner: The sports announcer enthusiastically announced the winner.

Order of Adverbs End Position:Place: The children play games outside.

Time: They begin their volunteer duty next week.

Manner: The speech at the convention did not go well.

Adverb Review

Adverbs should be as close as possible to the verbs, adjectives, adverbs or clauses that they modify.

She is very beautiful. She is only a child. The students learned sign

language amazingly quickly.Italian ice cream is especially

Adverbs such as a lot, a little, and slightly limit the word they modify and appear before that word.

What is an Adverb Clause?

A group of words which contains a subject and a finite verb that describes or adds to the meaning of a verb, an adjective or another adverb.

Adverb ClausesAdverb clauses allow the writer to describe relationships between ideas and to connect short sentences. I finished the novel that you recommended. I didn’t like it very much.I finished the novel that you recommended,even though I didn’t like it very much.

Adverb ClausesAn adverb clause is a dependent clause that begins with a subordinating conjunction and must be connected to an independent clause.

I don’t understand the concept because it is very complicated.

After it rained for a week, there was a lot of water in the canal.
