PRELIMINARY PROJECT RESEARCH & PLANNING

My main target audience will be the students of the college. I chose the students as my main target audience as they will be the ones reading the magazine. I appealed to them by adding stories that could help them in college life e.g. exam tips.

The cover image is of happy students smiling to match the great A Level results.

I didn’t use a lot of text on the front cover as this will not attract my target audience. If they see a lot of text on the front cover they may not want to read it, as they may get bored.

When creating the front cover and contents I learnt how to add layer styles such as, Stroke, Outer Glow, Gradient Overlay etc.

REFLECTIONS & FEEDBACK The feedback that I received will make

me continue to use a clear house style in other magazine covers or similar projects.

If I was to do this again I will use brighter and happier colours to make the magazine more attractive to the target audience’s eye.

MUSIC MAGAZINE The genre of my magazine is R&B/Soul

The name of my magazine is called ‘Rhythm & Soul’ I chose this name as the ‘R’ is R&B stands for Rhythm and I joined it with the other half of the genre which is Soul.

WHAT I LEARNED FROM THIS WAS…..

Cover DesignI learnt that mostly

bright and bold colours are used in typical R&B/Soul magazines. This reflects the personality of the genre and its audience, which is bubbly and happy.

Cover LinesFrom the majority of

examples I looked at, I can see that

the magazine mastheads have been in big and bold writing to

attract the audience.

FOR MY MUSIC MAGAZINE…. Target Audience: It will be aimed at both

males an females, in the age group of 16-32. I will try and aim it at a variety of ethnicities, as R&B/Soul music can be for anyone to enjoy.

Cover Price: It will not be too expensive, as the magazine is just starting up and people do not know it that well to spend a lot on it. So it will be £2.00

Publisher: It will be a small independent publisher

Unique Selling Point: The magazine will have competitions, free giveaways, posters and opportunities to meet and greet some of the celebrities

The masthead is one of the biggest form of text on the front cover to gain the audiences attention and for them not to forget the name.

The colours blue and red shows an edgy and calm side of the genre, R&B/Soul

The name, Chocolat’, is big also to show that is the main cover story.

I changed the image by cropping and scaling it so it can fit on the front cover properly and look professional

I changed this by adding brightness to it and cropping it to fit to screen.

The original image was a long two shot and I just wanted the image as the article was on this main person. So I had to crop the second person and some of the unnecessary background out of the image

Nothing was really wrong with this image. All that was done was a bit of cropping and scaling.

The key features are the headings. They are all in bold to attract attention. The logo is in put in for recognition.

HOW DOES THE CONTENTS PAGE LINK BACK TO THE COVER PAGE? It links back to the cover page because I

use the same house style of colours which were blue, red and white.

Also, one of images is the cover story and is near the top. This shows that I want the main focus of the magazine to be on the cover artist, Chocolat’

KEY POINTS OF CONTENTS PAGE

I made the reader want to read on as I used bright colours that will make them think good of the magazine. I also made the main and interesting stories have an image.

The links are that the correct image goes with the heading to let the reader know who and what is who.

The dominant and interesting stories have images. You can tell the importance of the story by the size of the image.

The information is placed in chronological order so people do no get confused.

HOW DOES THE CONTENTS PAGE FLAG UP YOUR DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD?

The double page spread is an interview of the cover image artist Chocolat’ which shows it’s an important story line. The contents page flags up to my double page spread because the image of Chocolat’ is the biggest which suggests that it is important enough to have a double page spread.

HERE’S AN EXAMPLE OF AN INSPIRING DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD…

THIS IS WHY I THINK THAT DOUBLE SPREAD WORKS I think it works because one side is

dedicated just to the artist alone so we can focus on her properly.

Then the other side is just focused on the interview.

It also works because not a lot of things are going on within the page, it is simple yet effective.

THIS IS HOW MY DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD WORKS It works in a similar way to the Madonna

example. The image on the one side lets the

reader focus on the cover artist and then focus on the interview itself on the other side of the double page spread.

Before the actual interview there is a brief description on the artist so the audience can know more about her.

From my feedback I changed the cover image as I was told it looks like a lifestyle magazine. The colour and size of the text ‘Chocolat’ was changed to match the colour of the double page spread. The masthead also changed as it didn’t meet the conventions of and R&B/Soul magazine.

that are going to be featured in the magazine. I also made the main and interesting points bigger than the less interesting features.

KEY MODIFICATIONS TO DOUBLE SPREAD FROM FEEDBACK I changed the colour scheme of the

double page spread to link with the heading on the cover page.

I made the borders have a different coloured stroke to stand out from the other images on the double page spread.

The feedback given was not a lot so I tried my best to make it better.
