• Romanticism– Emphasized emotion rather than reason– Are often peaceful scenes of rural life or

landscapes– Ludwig van Beethoven is best known composer of

this age

• Realism– Emphasizing what life is really like– Often showed life as pessimistic and hopeless– Charles Dickens wrote about the negative aspects

of the Industrial Revolution– Leo Tolstoy wrote War and Peace.

Education

• In Britain:– Sunday School began as an effort to teach poor

children how to read– Parliament voted to spend money to build public

schools for poor children– Required children to attend between ages 5-10– Later it was 5-14, and then part time until 18

• Germany– First to provide primary education that was

required for all children– Developed one of the finest systems of education

in Europe

• France– Jules Ferry formed the school system that required

all children to attend school until the age of 15– This system has continued with little change
