DIABETES

Is Diabetes infectious or non-infectious?

What is DIABETES?

• Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) is classed as a metabolism disorder. Metabolism refers to the way our bodies use digested food for energy and growth. Most of what we eat is broken down into glucose. Glucose is a form of sugar in the blood - it is the principal source of fuel for our bodies.

What is DIABETES?

• When our food is digested the glucose makes its way into our bloodstream. Our cells use the glucose for energy and growth. However, glucose cannot enter our cells without insulin being present - insulin makes it possible for our cells to take in the glucose.

• Insulin is a hormone that is produced by the pancreas. After eating, the pancreas automatically releases an adequate quantity of insulin to move the glucose present in our blood into the cells, and lowers the blood sugar level.

What causes DIABETES?

What causes DIABETES?• Defects in insulin production, insulin action, or

both. A person with diabetes has a condition in which the quantity of glucose in the blood is too elevated (hyperglycemia). This is because the body either does not produce enough insulin, produces no insulin, or has cells that do not respond properly to the insulin the pancreas produces. This results in too much glucose building up in the blood. This excess blood glucose eventually passes out of the body in urine.

• People who belong to family background having history of diabetes are 25% more prone to develop diabetes.

What causes DIABETES?

A bad diet and obesity are major factors for

developing Diabetes but eating too much sugar

does NOT develop diabetes.

Emotional stress also leads to Diabetes.

Types of DIABETES

• Diabetes Mellitus Type 1: You produce no insulin at all.

• Diabetes Mellitus Type 2: You don't produce enough insulin, or your insulin is not working properly.

• Gestational Diabetes: You develop diabetes just during your pregnancy.

How is it diagnosed?

• SYMPTOMS:

- Frequent Urination- Excessive thirst- Losing weight for no

reason- Weakness and fatigue- Tingling or numbness

in your hands, legs or feet.

Diabetes management

• Every diabetic person has a DIABETIC TESTING MACHINE. • They have to measure the glucose in their

blood every day.

Diabetes treatment

• What treatment do diabetic people take?

Diabetes treatment• All types of diabetes are treatable, but Type

1 and Type 2 diabetes last a lifetime; there is no known cure.

• The treatment for a patient with Type 1 is mainly injected insulin. Patients with Type 2 are usually treated with tablets. Plus dietary and exercise.

Facts about diabetes:

• Why is thirst one of the symptoms?

Facts about diabetes:

• Why is thirst one of the symptoms? If your blood sugar levels are too high, your body sends a signal to your brain telling you to drink more water to dilute the blood sugar levels back to normal. This causes your body to consume more water, which will lead to frequent urination. But since your blood sugar levels are too high, your body will keep thinking that you need more water.

Facts about diabetes:

• What are you supposed to do when a diabetic person faints?

Facts about diabetes:

• What are you supposed to do when a diabetic person faints?

Give them sugar!!!

Facts about diabetes:

If diabetic people faint we have to give them juice, jam, water with some sugar, etc… Why is this?

We don’t know how their glucose level is. If they have hyperglycemia and we give them sugar, they can get insulin injected once the ambulance and paramedics get there. But if that person has a hypoglycemia and we don’t give them sugar, while we wait for the ambulance their glucose level can get even lower and they may lose consciousness and even get into a coma.
