Geography Definitions

Population Distribution

• Definition: the arrangement or spread of people living in a given area; also, how the population of an area is arranged according to variables such as age, race, or sex.

Human Settlement Pattern

• Definition: The science of human settlements, including city or community planning and design.

Clustered Settlement

• Definition: a pattern of settlement in which houses and other buildings are laid out closely together.

Scattered Settlement (dispersed settlement)

• Definition: refers to the scattering of houses over a large area; where all areas are of equal (good) quality. (e.g. rural southwest Ontario has good soil.)

Linear Settlement

• Linear settlement is a geographic term that describes a group of mostly residential buildings arranged along a main thoroughfare or a coast. Linear settlements can also be formed where growth is restricted by hills, valleys or rivers.

Population Density

• Definition: the number of people per square kilometer

• Places with lots of population density: Bangladesh, Singapore, Hong Kong

• Places with low population density: Northern Ontario

Overpopulation• a situation in which too many people or

animals live in a certain area
