Gloria Fuertes

Biography

Gloria Fuertes was born in Madrid on June 20th 1917.

Her family was poor. Her father was a doorman and her mother was a seamstreess.

She as an only child. She went to a catholic school.

Her mother died in 1934, so she had to work in a factory.

While she worked in the factory she also wrote poems.

She studied literature.

She started a children´s magazine called “Maravillas”.

In 1947 she received the award for “Best songs lyrics”.

Later she received a grant and moved to the United States for two years.

She collaborated with different women´s magazines such as “Chicas”, “Postismos” and “Cervatana”.

In the 70´s she had a TV show and recited her poems. She became very popular and was considered the Poet of the children.

She died on November 26th, 1998 in Madrid. She was 81 years old.
