THE PHASES OF THE FIRST YEAR OF TEACHING

Balance Between Life and Work: Tips for New (and not-so new) TeachersWe can encourage our staff to:Decide what is really important. Everyone

wants to have a successful career, but it shouldn’t always have to come at the expense of family & friends.

Set reasonable hours early on. New teachers often work, work, work because they feel they have to. They do not get paid for these extra hours, and this must be kept in mind.

Eat a healthy dietWear good, sturdy shoes.

Balance Between Life and Work: Tips for New (and not-so-new) TeachersKeep time with family and friends work

free. Do not try to multi-task all of the time. This usually leads to annoyed friends, neglected children and spouses and frustrated teachers.

Keep time for loved ones free from school work whenever possible. This may mean waiting until bedtime to correct papers, or staying after school to finish up planning. Time is at a premium, don't waste it.

Balance Between Life and Work: Tips for New (and not-so-new) TeachersWork out regularly. New teachers often say

that exercise is the last thing that they have time for. However, it's a huge stress reliever and quintessential to a healthy lifestyle.

Ask for help from veteran teachers. Teachers are often willing to share ideas and lesson plans, and these things can reap huge benefits to new teachers. Don't be afraid to ask. It's not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of strength and confidence.
