Current State of American Ed.

S One problem is that American schools are not adequately

preparing students to develop global knowledge and

What if…

THERE WAS MORE TO THIS DATA THAN MEETS THE EYE?

It’s more than Numbers and

Letters!

United States should consider creating new ones[industries], which demands different talents and intelligences…we must develop different abilities, talents, and skills rather than compete with them in the same domains. (Zhao, 2008)

S Can we provide learning that fosters increased creativity, collaboration, problem solving and understanding the interconnectedness of us all?

S Knowledge of Math, Language Arts and Literacy, and Science are without a doubt necessary to maintain a free society.

S Our globalized world demands more from our students.

S Higher math, language arts and literacy, and science scores will not properly prepare them.

S We must do more, they deserve that from us, because it’s the right thing to do.

How should we(educators)

respond to this?

Consider this…

S “The recent economic recession has caused many

changes in the business landscape across the

country, including high unemployment rates. Due to

these high rates and the struggling economy,

University of Missouri researchers have found that in

recent years the number of Americans engaging in

entrepreneurship has risen significantly.”-Nathan

Hurst, (2012)

S How do we prepare our students to become

Entrepreneurs?

The Skills of Tomorrow

S Mission: 21st century life and career skills enable

students to make informed decisions that prepare them

to engage as active citizens in a dynamic global society

and to successfully meet the challenges and

opportunities of the 21st-century global workplace.

S Are we as educators doing this?

S Are our Math, Language Arts and Literacy, and Science

scores a valid measure of 21st Century skills?

21st Century and Technology

“These new 21st century learners are highly relational and

demand quick access to new knowledge. More than that,

they are capable of engaging in learning at a whole new

level. With the world literally at their fingertips, today’s

students need teachers and administrators to re-envision

the role of technology in the classroom.” -Nancye Blair

(2012)

S Let’s review our results and discuss some solutions to

our concerns.

My Pledge

Understanding that a move toward a more dynamic approach toward our practices as an educational institution has it’s challenges, I will commit to the following:

S To Learn the applications of new technologies in the education process along with my school staff and community stakeholders. So that I can understand and implement what I am requiring of everyone.

S Provide continuous professional development based on technological shifts required for us to address the needs of our students in the 21st century.

S Encourage and support staff and community input and participation in the planning of how we will implement the technological measures in order to support 21st century learning at our school.

The PARCC is coming

S You had to see this one coming.

S It really was a matter of time.

S We can respond two ways:

1. Embrace the change and prepare to master it.

2. Complain, don’t prepare and allow it’s “newness” to justify the nullification of our existence as a relevant educational institution in the 21st century

S There is a growing trend toward online learning completely independent of individual districts. (Christensen and Horn, 2008)

What I need from you?

What the research suggests

S Of seven (7) factors that influence student success through the use of technology, five(5) of them require the direct actions Teachers. Therefore this is an effort that we all must rally behind for the success of our students and our institution as a viable option for education in the 21st century.

S ISTE(2008)

S You guys are the stars of the show!

Next Steps

S We are currently assembling a committee that will

oversee the integration of technology in assessments

and project based learning.

S This committee will be comprised of 2-4 parents and 6-8

teachers

S We currently need 1 more parent and 5 more teachers.

S This will be a great opportunity to grow professionally as

well as the ability to have direct influence on the direction of

the technology integration process.
