THE HISTORY AND TRADITIONS
OF JULIUSZ SLOWACKI SECONDARY SCHOOL
OUR PATRON
Juliusz Słowacki- (born September 4, 1809 in Krzemieniec, diedApril 3, 1849 in Paris),one of the greatest Polish poets of the Romantic Period. Next to Mickiewicz and Krasiński, he is called our national bard.
HISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF THE SCHOOL
The beginnings of our high school date back to late XIX century, when in Theatre Street there the Department of Science led by Ms.Kazimiera Garbalska was created.
In 1908 the school was transformed into 8 year Female Secondary School, whose owner and superior was first Ms.Wacława Golczewska, and then Ms.Chrzanowska.
In 1920 the school was nationalised and changed into Juliusz Słowacki Secondary School, and Ms.Zofia Idzikowska became its headmistress.
During World War II the building was occupied by Nazis. Ms.Idzikowska was able
to hide and store all the valuable possessions. Together with other teachers
she gave clandestine lessons.
After the liberation of the city in January 1945, thanks to Ms.Idzikowska the classes started in February. At that time the name of the school
was- III National Juliusz Słowacki Secondary School and it was just for girls.
In 1967 Juliusz Słowacki Secondary School became a
co-educational school.
WITH TRADITION INTO THE XXI CENTURY
Our school is unique because of its atmosphere, skilful combination of tradition and modernity and,
what is the most important, care for individual development of its
students.
OUR MISSION
The mission of our school is to give students optimal conditions to develop, acquire knowledge and skills. Our motto is the ancient maxim:
"NON SCHOLAE SED VITAE DISCIMUS„
(We are learning not for school, but for life)
The School belongs to the International Family of Juliusz Słowacki Schools, which can be proud of their own anthem and meetings with associated schools.
The tradition is to
celebrate the Patron Day.
HIGH LEVEL OF EDUCATION
Our students have been passing the Final Exam very well for many years.
The school has undoubtedly humanities
traditions, but we are aware now that science is the most necessary on the
labor market, so that our school offers great classes of biological-chemical and
geographical-linguistic profiles.
OLYMPIES, COMPETITIONS= SUCCESSES
In the years 2008, 2009, 2010 – we obtained 2’nd place in Częstochowa , according to
the ranking of the Polish national newspapers such as „Perspektywy" and
„Rzeczpospolita" in respect to the number of subject competitions winners and
finalists.
The students of our school take part in many subject competitions. Winning the title of the winner or finalist means that the person, after graduating school, has a free entrance to university. Every year we have several such students.
FOREIGN LANGUAGES NOT ONLY DURING THE CLASSES
Students of Juliusz Słowacki Secondary School have the opportunity to learn foreign
languages: English, German, Latin, Russian and Italian.
For many years the school has been cooperating with high schools in Kiel,
Forchheim and with students from Spain, Italy, Belgium, Lithuania and Norway in the COMENIUS project.
