Objectives:

•Explore the concept of mobile learning (M-Learning)•Check out some examples of M-Learning•Set YOURSELF some M-Learning goals for 2009•Think about how you can take advantage of M-Learning outside YOUR classroom•Have some fun!

What is mobile learning?

anytime, anywhere...

What are we talking about - technology-wise?

Portable, personal, embedded, ubiquitous, networked

Lit Review into Mobile Learning, R Cobcroft, Queensland University of Technology, 2006

Data storehouses: calendars, contacts, music and photo collections

Horizon Report 2008

Mobile broadband

Grass roots video

Why think about mobile learning now?

Nonetheless...while there are abundant examples of personal andprofessional uses for mobiles, educational contentdelivery via mobile devices is still in the early stages. The expectation is that advances in technology overthe next twelve to eighteen months will remove thelast barriers to access and bring mobiles truly intothe mainstream for education.

Next 12 months - YOU!

Next 12 - 18 months - YOUR STUDENTS!

Becta: increased engagement, learner autonomy, more opportunityfor collaborative/distributed learning and experiential/situated learning

Revised Harnessing Technology Strategy, 2008

CONSIDER....

Do you have access to any of these items?

How many of yourstudents have

access?

Turn your mobiles on...

Open question: How can I reduce waste?

Grouped by software and can choose different method of inquiry: ask an expert, run experiment outdoors

Tailored resources and curriculum materials

Share information on a central website

Informed discussion and concencus

Curriculum link: analysing data

Collect sound/photos/video of your journey home...and upload them to flickr and geotag them...then add them to Google Earth...

Compare/contrast road pollution that different students encounter.

What can we do to reduce road pollution/environmental impact of our journey home?
