MAKING PREDICTIONS

Will or Going to?

GOING TO

We use going to when something is definitely going to happen. We can see evidence that nothing can stop it from happening.

Look at the following examples…

GOING TO

• It’s going to rain. I can see the clouds and so I’m opening my umbrella!

GOING TO

• They’re going to fall over.

GOING TO

• He’s going to hit the ball.

WILL

We use ‘will’ when we think something will happen but we aren’t 100% sure.

This is the structure we use when we guess what will happen next year, or when an astrologist predicts our future.

Look at the following examples…

WILL

• I think she’ll go on holiday.

WILL

• I think they’ll separate.

WILL

• He thinks I’ll have 10 children and will live until I’m 105.

WILL

• We can also give negative predictions, but we say ‘I don’t think’ and then say a positive sentence.

• E.g. I don’t think… it’ll be warm. (= I think it’ll be cold)

I don’t think, …

• I don’t think they’ll stay together.

I don’t think,…

• I don’t think she’ll go to work tomorrow.

WHAT CAN YOU REMEMBER?

WHAT CAN YOU REMEMBER?

AND FINALLY…

• What do you think will happen next year?• What are you going to do next year?
