Confidentiality and Privacy•When dealing with healthcare
records it is important to keep the patient’s health information private
• Explaining that “privacy” also means that unless there is a valid reason even healthcare professionals should not be in the patient’s records
HIPAA Laws and Training•Explaining what the HIPAA law
states and why it covers the items it does is important for the employees to understand
•Give examples of what information is actually considered protected health information using HIPAA handouts
Examples of HIPAA Lawsuits•Next it is critical that
employees understand the importance of this abiding by HIPAA laws and regulations
•Utilization of experiences and outcomes of others will shine a light on the importance of the issue
Recent Company Violations•Explanation of the current and
past company violations would make it visible that this is something the company is serious about and is monitoring for any further abuse
Fines for Abuse/Neglect•Identifying to the employees
that there are usually fines associated with abuse or deliberate neglect should make them wary of performing the same acts
•This should start making them wary of their own actions and should help them start the self-monitoring process and watching out for their co-workers
Computer and Self Monitoring•Purchasing a system where
accessing the records requires a password is important
•Access to records should be randomly monitored to ensure abuse of power is not occurring
•Have representatives walking around the office ensuring information is not being left out in the open or on computer monitors
Examination/Test•At the end of the training there
will be a test to identify any weak areas of the training
•The exam/test will also identify the ability to comprehend the material and to hold personnel accountable for any future violations
•This training should be given to all new employees
•Training will also recur annually for current employees
