Being Outdoors has been part of my life and my families since I can remember!

So it was natural for me when I became a teacher to :

• Teach students about the outdoors• Use the outdoors as a classroom

June 1981 My

First Outdoor Ed Trips

Sugar Loaf Hills RMNP

Unless their families do outdoor activities, there is little chance that

students/children will have the skills, interest and the equipment

to do things outdoors!

PWSD Outdoor Education

• Centers around two main programs:– Grade 6 Outdoor Ed – Outdoor Classroom

For the most part, you usually don’t see students outside with

their teachers other than for Phys-ed type activities!

Although we always seem to envy urban schools – the PWSD is blessed with outdoor

learning/recreation areas!!!

How do we facilitate and help develop outdoor

learning/education/experiences/skills for PWSD students - and for other students in Manitoba as well ???

Scotland

What can we do???• Strengthen our partnerships and

utilize the resources they offer• Start a MTS Outdoor Education

SAGE• Outdoor Ed Center for PWSD

– Deep Lake cook house/warming hut• Kayak, Canoe, Xcountry ski,

Snowshoe Mtn. bike• Take off point for DofE adventures

• Central Trail & Birdtail Valley• Asessippi ski area• Rossman Lake• Birtle ski trails• Hamiota Ski trails

• Extend the Grade 6 program– RM Conference @ capacity

• 3 other facilities in area– Dauphin Bible– Anglican Church– Rossman Lake ?

• Our School Grounds are very sterile– Create wild habitats

• Grow wild plants and grasses

– Create small wetlands?• Organic trails/areas like by Inglis

school – is across the road too far?

• Work with BU to help develop teachers with the skills/attitude
