INTRODUCTION An EMBEDDED SYSTEM is a computer system
with a dedicated function within a larger mechanical or electrical system.
Embedded systems contain microcontrollers, micro processors or digital signal processors
Some applications are digital watches and MP3 players, to large stationary installations like traffic lights, factory controllers,
ABSTRACT OF THE PROJECT
To track the sun’s position and to capture the maximum solar energy through solar panel.
And then this energy is converted to electrical energy by photo voltaic effect
Solar energy is renewable and available throughout the year.
The project contains two systems, one is tracking and the other is controlling system.
Tracking system make angular rotation of solar panel with the help of dc motor in synchronous position of the sun.
The control system is designed with efficient Microcontroller and RTC which drives the tracking module at different instants.
MODULES USED
LPC2148 Micro controller RTC 16x2 Liquid Crystal Display Keypad Power supply Position keys Solar panel DC Motor driver and DC Motor
BLOCK DIAGRAM
BLOCK DIAGRAM DESCRIPTION
LPC2148 SPECIFICATIONS:-
1. 40 KB of on-chip static RAM
2. 512 KB of on-chip flash
3. 2 UARTS
4. 60 MHz maximum CPU clock
5. 2 ADC’s and one DAC
6. High speed bus interfaces
7. Low power Real-Time Clock (RTC) with independent power
ARCHITECTURE of LPC2148:-
POWER SUPPLY:-
Transformer:- steps down high voltage AC mains to low voltage AC.
Rectifier:- converts AC to DC, but the DC output is varying.
Smoothing:- smoothens the DC from varying greatly to a small ripple.
Regulator:- eliminates ripple by setting DC output to a fixed voltage.
LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY:-
GND, VCC, VEE :- vcc and vee are supplied with 5v supply and ground is connected to ground
Register Select(RS):- If RS=1 then data register is selected, user can display data on lcd .
if RS=0 then command register is selected, commands can be sent over lcd like clear display and positioning the cursor.
READ/WRITE:-
When R/W=1 then it is read modeWhen R/W=0 then it is write mode
En (Enable) :-
The enable pin is used by the LCD to latch information presented to its data pins. When data is supplied to data pins, a high - to - low pulse must be applied to this pin in order for the LCD latch in the data pins. This pulse must be a minimum of 450 ns wide.
D0 - D7 :-
The 8 - bit data pins, D0 - D7, are used to send information to the LCD or read the contents of the LCD's internal registers.
DC MOTOR DRIVER :-
DC MOTOR:-
Dc motor runs on dc current at speed of 3.5 rpm.
Voltage required is 12v
POSITION KEYS AND KEYPAD:-
Position keys are used to reset the solar panel to its initial position
Keypad is used to set the time in RTC module
REAL TIME CLOCK (RTC):-
Counts seconds, minutes, hours, days, day of the week, date, month, and year
This comes with a small power supply of its own
This power supply helps RTC update time, also after power supply is switched off
ADVANTAGES
They are beneficial as the sun's position in the sky will change gradually over the course of a day and over the seasons throughout the year.
In summer months with its long days of sunlight available to capture and no energy will be lost.
Electricity production in tracking system is relatively 30% to 40% more than stand alone solar panels
DISADVANTAGES
Relatively high in cost than stand alone solar panel systems
Regular maintenance is required
Weather condition can affect the system
More area is required for installation
APPLICATIONS
Remote places
Solar heating
In water treatment technologies
Cooking
Electricity production
CONCLUSION
A solar tracker is designed employing the new principle of Real Time Clock, for effective change of relative angle of solar panel with the sun. By using this method, the solar tracker was successful in maintaining a solar array at a sufficiently perpendicular angle to the sun.
