Where is the Dead Sea?

The Dead Sea

Facts about the Dead sea.• Did you know the Dead sea isn’t a sea it’s a salt lake?

• The Dead sea is 3 million years old!

• The Dead sea is the second saltiest body of water in the

world, with a salt content of 33%

• There is no marine life in the Dead Sea. The high

mineral and salt content of the waters make it

impossible for fish or plants to live. However, tiny

communities of bacteria live near thin plumes of fresh

water that shoot from undersea springs.

More Facts about the Dead sea.

• The Dead Sea is 400 metres below sea level

• The mineral content of the sea makes the water very dense which means that it is very easy to float

• The Dead Sea salt is different to normal table salt. It contains important minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium and many more.

Why is the Dead Sea so salty?

• Water flows into the Dead Sea from streams and rivers, but does not flow out.

• As a result, water is only lost by evaporation which leaves the salt behind. The rate at which the Dead Sea loses water is far greater than the rate at which it gets replenished with rainfall. As a result over time, the water has become saltier.
