Universal DesignHow it works in education

Evan Theobald

The main idea of Universal Design

• It is a framework for designing learning experiences for everyone across the wide range of learners.

• Makes sure everyone is a successful learner and eventually becomes an expert learner.

Three principles that education follows to implement Universal Design

Provide multiple means of representation. - Symbolic number and physical manipulative. - For example, allowing math students to use blocks and cubes.

Provide multiple means of action and expression. - Students vary greatly in how they express what they know. Provide multiple means of engagement. - If we don’t motivate the students they will lose focus.

4 components that must be universally designed into education

The goals: The standards that represent what’s actually important to do in the classroom.

The materials: How the textbooks, chalk boards, posters on the walls, fit into the the classroom and represent key aspects of universal design.

The Methods: How the teacher goes about teaching to effectively teach and communicate information that is vital to the learners. Ex: Lecture, real world experiences, collaborative group work.

The means of assessment: How are we sure learning is really occurring. Changing focus to reduce the disabilities in the curriculum so that more students succeed and the goal of expert learners is met.
